As soon as I arrived home I went into the only room I knew had white walls in the house. I rushed into it to see me mother cradling my sister’s head in her lap. The scars on her chest and legs were deep, the blood staining her clothing. I went and sat next to her, Varen still at the door way taking in the scene.

I didn’t know how this could have happened. I was shocked and didn’t feel the tears come and mix with my sister’s blood. “Mom, why did this happen? We only left her for so long.”

“I don’t know Leilah, but whatever it was, it’s not human.” As soon as she said those words I blanked out. Instantly thinking about what had just happened with me. If this thing was not human and I was having vision, then I must not be human either. What was I? I went back through all my mythological species and wondered what I could be. I was scared. Did this mean that unnatural things were about to happen? Was something coming beyond us and nobody knew?

“Mrs. Romo, you can’t possibly be saying that. If it was inhuman then what would it be?” Varen’s question interrupted my thoughts. What could he have meant “if it was inhuman…” That could mean that something was up Varen knew something. I know it was silly to think such a thought that my best friend was implying that there other creatures among us. But his words sent a dajavu feeling through me. I had heard that before.

Before I knew what I was doing I left the room and pulled Varen along with me.

“Varen I’m going to tell you something. You better not freak out on me though, ok.”

I took a deep breath and he stared at me waiting for me to start. “Seconds before my mom told me my sister was dead on the phone… I had a… vision.”

He stared at me wide eyed. I could tell that he didn’t believe me. Instead his next words shocked me. “You should be grateful Leilah. You have finally begun.” He began pacing across the floor. “This means a lot. My job can finally be done. I can finish at last. The elders will be glad to hear their warrior has finally blossomed in her darkness.”

It was all so confusing, what he was saying? Who were the elders? What did he mean by blossom in the darkness? What was his job and who was this warrior?

“Varen who the hell are you talking about?”

“You.”

I laughed, “Care to elaborate more please?”

“Leilah, this means a lot to me. Out of all people you are lucky to have this role to lead the underworld into war against the heavens and shatter them with all that is sharp in your soul. You are the greatness we have been looking for. My job was to find you again. To protect you and never leave you because you are special.”

I know those words should have made a girls heart flutter with love but in this case all he wanted was to not lose his job. Was it ok to say I was disappointed? That I was starting to like him as more than a friend? I shook the thought away. I couldn’t think such things about him.

I felt a tear on my cheek. God I’ve been crying a lot all day. I’m so emotional. Varen instantly whipped my tear away and carried me to my room. He laid me in bed pulled the covers up. I felt my eyes droop as I became sleepy. I felt the bed sink as Varen slipped in bed with me and pulled me close to him. I snuggled closer to him as he hugged me and fell asleep.
