"Three...two...one...push."
Charlie nearly crushes my fingers while squeezing my hand throughout the push. I'm numb to it now, quite honestly.
"We're almost there, one down one to go. And one more push for me now, dear. Come on."
Charlie cries out, and then suddenly the room is full of the sound of baby wailing. My heart nearly stops when I hear it, and I see a nurse whisk the second baby away to the other side of the room. Beside me, Charlie is sweaty and exhausted looking. She shuts her eyes, breathing heavily. The nurse smiles at Troye and me.
"Bixenmans, your daughters are in the other room and you can come and hold them now."
Troye leans down and kisses Charlie's forehead. "You did a great job. Thank you."
I squeeze her hand and she smiles weakly. "Come and see me later, okay?" she whispers, and we promise to return.
The nurse leads us into the room next door and we see our twins swaddled in yellow blankets, nestled in one of those little heated bed carts they have for babies. Troye exhales softly and grips my arm.
"Have a seat, if you'd like," the nurse says. "I'll pass the to you."
We sit on the love seat in the corner of the room, and the nurse passes the first one to me and the second to Troye. He starts crying the second she's in his arms.
"They're so perfect," he whispers to me, and looking down at them I absolutely agree. So tiny and perfect. Nothing could have prepared me for this feeling. I've never loved anything more, I feel like I can't contain it. I don't want anything bad to happen to them ever. Tears prickle in my eyes looking down at their little faces, all rosy and squished up. Which reminds me. I look up at the nurse, but I don't even have to ask my question before she answers it.
"Yep, they're identical." She says with a smile. "You've got some crazy days ahead. I'll be back later with some paperwork, but for now, enjoy. And congratulations."
I look over at Troye. His mouth is open, and there are tears on his cheeks, but he looks shocked. "They're identical." He repeats softly.
"Holy crap Jacob we have identical twins."
I nod. "Are you happy?"
He nods, tears starting to fall again, and he leans over to kiss me. "So happy."
"I love you. And I love them."
"I know. Me too. More than anything."
