It's 1am according to the neon numbers on the digital clock. Everyone I know should be asleep right now. So why is my phone ringing. I roll over and grab it off the nightstand. Jacob. Why would Jacob be- oh. I hit answer as fast as I can.
"Jacob? Is it Charlie?"
"Yeah, Troye, she came over about a half hour ago, we were waiting to see if she was just having a moment, but she's not and her contractions are getting close together. We're going to head to the hospital in a couple minutes."
"Shit." I swear, pushing the covers back and getting out of bed. "I'm booking a red-eye right now, I'll be there as fast as I can. Should I call someone to pick me up at LAX?"
"Hari will be there, just call her as soon as your flight lands."
"Okay, I'm hurrying, Jakes. I'll be there really fast, okay? Stay with Charlie."
"I am. Be safe, don't forget anything at the hotel. I'll see you soon. I love you."
"Love you too. Bye "
I touch down in Los Angeles 2 hours and 17 minutes later. Hari is waiting for me in the passenger greeting area, looking tired but surprisingly put together. I hurry over to her, tugging my suitcase behind me.
"Hari, hey thanks for coming on short notice."
"It's no problem. Want me to take your suitcase?"
"No, I've got it. Let's just get to the car."
"Are you nervous?" Hari asks me, backing out of her parking space skillfully.
"Terrified." I say in a hushed voice. She reaches over and takes me hand.
"It'll be okay. If there is any two people on would pick it be parents, it'd be you and Jake. You guys will be the best, I know."
I give her a smile. "Thanks, Hari."
"Of course. Any updates from Jacob?"
"They're at the hospital, she's 8 centimeters dilated as of 10 minutes ago. Things are progressing fine, too well actually, she's moving quickly and I need to be there."
"Well, looks like we'll be there in about...15 minutes, tops."
When we arrive at the hospital, Hari finds us the quickest parking spot possible and I unbuckle. "Thanks for everything, Hari, seriously."
"I'll drive you to the hospital at 3am anytime, Troye." I lean in so she can kiss me on the cheek. "Call me after, I wanna come visit."
"I will, thank you thank you, goodnight.
"Good luck!" She calls after me.
I wave at her and jog into the hospital, hurrying to the front desk.
"Hi, my name is Troye Bixenman, I'm here because my surrogate is having my twins, can I please go back?" I say it breathlessly, without pause.
The nurse looks up at me. "Of course, what's the patient's name?"
"Charlotte Vann."
She types something up on her computer quickly. "Alright, and if you'd like to be allowed into the delivery room I will need to see some ID."
I reach for my wallet in my back pocket, only to discover it's not there. I pat down all my pockets before I remember that my wallet is in my bag. And my bag is in Hari's car that she drove away 3 minutes ago.
"I...I don't have any on me." I say weakly.
The nurse frowns. "Sir, I cannot let you back without proper ID."
"I just got off a flight from Seattle, I left my bag in the car that drove me here, I don't have any on me at the moment."
"Sir, I'm sorry but I have to follow hospital policy. You can't go into the delivery room."
I exhale shakily, close to a full on breakdown. It's 3am, I've barely slept, and I'm about to be a father, but I can't go back to see my surrogate give birth. And she is literally about to start giving birth. "I have to go back there, I can't miss my kids being born. Please."
The nurse shakes her head. "I'm sorry, sir, but-"
"Please can I just see my husband. He's back there and he can confirm that I'm- I'm me. Please. I don't have any identification on me, I'm sorry."
The nurse turns and whispers something to her co-worker, then faces me again. "Sir we're going to bring your husband out here to identify you."
I sigh with relief. "Thank you."
Within a minute or so, Jacob appears, led by a different nurse. She points at me, and he nods, saying something I can't hear. The first nurse gives the second one a thumbs up, and she looks back at me. "You're good to head back."
I thank her and rush over to Jacob. He hugs me as soon as I reach him. "Are you good? how was your flight?"
"Fine, I'm fine, it's all fine. How's Charlie? How are you?"
"I'm good, and so is she. Come on, I'll take you to her."
We get into the softly lit delivery room, and Charlie is sitting on a big green yoga ball, rocking softly. She looks absolutely huge all of the sudden and I don't know how it didn't hit me until now. She truly does look ready to pop, even though I hate that expression.
When we enter, Jacob goes over to her quickly, taking her hand. Her breath hitches and I can see her squeezing him tightly. Her forehead is beaded with sweat. Jacob looks at me mouthing, she's having another contraction.
Throughout the next 20 minutes, nurses come in and out to check on Charlie. We hold her hand through several contractions, and she seems surprisingly quiet and calm, focusing on her breathing rather than making much noise. Just before 4am, the nurse who's been checking her vitals tells us that she's going to hey the doctor in about 5 minutes, because we're close. The announcement sends a weird spasm of panic through my chest, and I feel a little shaky. Jacob excuses himself to leave the room for a second, and takes me with him pulling me into the bathroom. As soon as the door shuts behind us, he cups my face, leaning our heads together.
"Are you okay?"
I feel hot tears prickling in my eyes. "I'm scared as hell right now."
Jacob hugs me closer. "It's all going to be okay. It's gonna be okay, we've been waiting for this."
I nod against him. "This is it. Are you ready?"
"I will be. I will be. This is our last moment of being just us, Troye. We're gonna dads, we're going to go into that room and come out before we know it as fathers. Not a couple - a family."
A tear slips down my cheek. "Don't say that, okay, I'm gonna cry."
"You already are." He tilts my head up to give me the slowest, gentlest kiss I can ever remember receiving from him. When he pulls back he wraps me in a tight hug.
"I love you so much. Don't make me cry, but I love you so much."
"I love you Jacob. I always will. Now come on, let's go back."
