Anne's POV
11:30pm
"THUMP THUMP''
Huh? What's that sound?
I open my eyes and become aware of my surroundings. Half asleep I head downstairs and open the door
''ANNE''
''Gilbert? What are you doing here?'' I ask as I rub my eyes.
''Mary'' he said as he catches his breath
''she's having the baby''
''NOW? But you told me she isn't due for another 4 weeks?!'' I exclaimed.
''Tell that to the baby'' Gilbert said.
''I'll go with you, just give me a second'' I say as I realize that I look like a mess.
I close the door and go the mirror. I put my hair in some messy braids and grab my shoes.
''MARILLA IM GOING TO GO DELIVER A BABY WITH GILBERT I'LL COME BACK LATER'' I scream out in to the house.
''Okay let's go'' I say as I step out the door.
I hear the rustling leaves following us as we run through the forest, a comfortable silence fills the dark night as I can't help but think of the moon as it illuminates the bark of the tree's trunks ever so beautifully.
''You know you don't look bad with your hair down'' Gilbert says causally.
''Oh'' I say startled
He smirks
''thanks?'' I say unsure if that was a compliment.
We make it to Gilbert's house, and you can hear the screams of Mary from a mile away. Gilbert opens the door to his room and we find a screaming Mary, a confused Bash at the foot of the bed and a doctor.
''Good afternoon, I'm doctor Graymond, I was told you were looking for a doctor.''
''Yes, how did you get here so fast?''
''Oh I just moved to this area so I wasn't very far'' he responds.
''Well I'm Gilbert I'm studying to be a doctor too and this is Anne'' Gilbert said as they shook hands
Mary lets out a scream in pain
''Oh right, best get to it then''
''Gilbert I'm guessing you know the procedure, Anne bring me pieces of cloth and a glass of water''
We both nodded.
''May I Mary?'' Gilbert said as he hesitated to pull up her dress
She gave a slight nod.
''She's 8 centimeters dilated'' Gilbert informed.
''She should be ready to push any minute now''
''Here's the water and cloth'' I said
''Give some water to Mary and wipe her face'' ordered Doctor Graymond.
''She reached 10''
''Time to push Mary'' Graymond said.
The next minutes went by like a flash, my brain didn't really process anything as my thoughts were crowded by the constant howls of pain by Mary. I pitied her, its so strange that the way that we bring happiness into our lives is through such pain.
''I see a head! Just one more push Mary'' Doctor Graymond said hopefully.
''I CAN'T DO IT''
''One more Mary, you can do it'' Gilbert reassured.
''AHHHHHHH'' Mary howled as she pushed one last time
''Looks like Rachel Lynde was right, it's a girl''
The crying baby was wrapped in a blanket and handed to Bash.
''Bash are you crying?'' Gilbert said with a chuckle.
''No, just have something in my eye'' Bash murmured.
''Hand her over'' Mary said reaching out for the baby.
Bash placed her in Mary's arms. Mary let out a small chuckle as she held her, a smile bigger than any castle.
''Oh she's beautiful'' Mary said as she began to tear up.
''Would you like to hold her Anne'' Mary asked after a few minutes
''I would be delighted'' I said with a smile.
She's beautiful just by her lovely brown complexion I can tell she will grow up to be as gorgeous as Diana and as happy as a sunflower in a hot summer morning. Just thinking about it makes me smile!
''What are you going to name her?" I ask
''We were thinking Elizabeth'' Mary said with a smile.
''that's a beautiful name'' I say
I hand back baby Elizabeth to Mary who passes her to Gilbert.
''Your welcome to stay here Anne it is dark outside'' Mary said.
''No its alright, I don't want Marilla and Matthew to worry. I'll be fine. I'll come back in the morning'' I say as I grab my coat.
''I'll walk you home'' Gilbert said as he ran to catch up to me.
''No you have to stay with the baby, I'll be fine Gilbert don't worry. We both know I can fend for myself''
''Alright but please be careful''
I nodded and left the house, I walked home cheerfully thinking of dear Elizabeth and all the things I would teach her.
I step inside the house quietly hoping that Marilla was still asleep.
''For Heavens sake Anne were have you been!'' Marilla said as I opened the door
''Mary had the baby'' I said
''and you didn't have the right mind to tell me before leaving!''
''Well I did, didn't you hear me?''
Marilla raised her eyebrow
''Well how is the baby?''
''Oh she's beautiful Marilla! Her name's Elizabeth and she has the most divine complexion'' I said
''We'll visit them in the morning. Now to bed you go, you surely need all the sleep you can get'' Marilla said.
Gilbert's POV
''I'm going to get some sleep, good night'' Mary said as she took the baby and headed to the bathroom
''Okay, Gilbert and I will finish cleaning up here'' Bash says
We came to a silence as we both got entranced in our own thoughts
''I saw the way you looked at her.'' Bash said breaking the silence
''huh?''
''at Anne''
''I don't know what you mean''
''don't play dumb, I saw the way you looked at her Blythe''
I remembered something, a thought...
She looked beautiful, holding Elizabeth in her arms as her eyes sparkled and she smiled, but she didn't just smile with her lips, she smiled with her eyes, her cheeks, her nose. She would be a great mother.
''I don't know''
''don't know what''
''the question that you're asking me the answer is I don't know''
''if you like her''
''If I like her''
''I have a feeling you do''
