''You are insane! How could you possibly think that Charles Dickens is a better writer than Charlotte Bronte?!?" Anne exclaimed.
''Great Expectations really won my heart'' he sheepishly smiled
''I'm sorry Gilbert, we just can't be friends. Not after you have shared this information with me.'' She giggled and walked away dramatically.
Anne entered the classroom and took her seat next to Diana, she began speaking to her about today's math assignment, but Diana seemed distant, far off in a place unknown only to the depths of the souls who bear it, Anne thought
As class started everyone seemed to quiet down and begin working, the day unsurprisingly went by quickly and boringly.
''So class before you are dismissed I have an interesting assignment that I'm sure some of you will very much enjoy'' Ms. Stacy looked at Anne ''You are to write a page long story about something in the point of view of a misunderstood character. It can be whoever you like but it must be original.''
Anne's squeal practically echoed through the room as Ms. Stacy holds a smile. Billy surprisingly also seemed excited about the assignment as the rest of the students scrambled out of the schoolhouse all chattering about what their stories would be about.
Anne stood out the most as she skipped home delightfully talking away to Diana about the characters she would write
''Oh isn't this marvelous Diana! Our own stories that Ms. Stacy herself will read. If this isn't heaven, I don't know what is!!''
''that's great Anne but I must get going'' Diana said rashly
''But your house isn't more than 2 miles away?'' Anne said disappointingly.
''Well I have...'' she stopped ''a family picnic today, yes a picnic'' Diana stuttered
''Oh I love picnics, could I possibly come with you?'' Anne asked
''NO'' Diana said abruptly ''don't you want to work on your story?''
''Of course, stories don't write themselves Diana'' Anne said as she skipped off with a final wave to her best friend.
She thought about heading home but remembered that today Rachel was coming over for dinner and as much as she loved Rachel, she kept teasing Anne about Gilbert and her which was ridiculous so she decided it was best if she arrived late.
As she reached the brown house she had so memorized and seen many times. She only needed to knock once before the door open and a goofy boy with curls in his face opened the door
''Anne what a nice surprise'' he said as he brushed the curls from his face.
"Hello Gilbert I thought it might be fun for us to do our homework together''
''that sounds great, Bash and Mary are visiting Mary's son back in the bog, so they'll be gone for a while'' He opened the door for her to enter.
''I'm sure you already have like one hundred story ideas laid out, haven't you?'' he chuckled.
''you would assume right, I'm thinking a tree that lives within the dark woods who all the kids are afraid except this one boy who sees beyond the trees sees beyond the darkness, sees the tree...'' she continues talking, Gilbert paying attention to every single word not noticing that he was subconsciously staring at her soft pink lips.
His spell of enchantment wore off as Anne finished talking about her idea.
''Umm would you like some water?'' he said awkwardly in a cute boyish way that anybody could tell.
''that be lovely, thank you''
He came back with two glasses of water and handed one to Anne who smiled gratefully. ''So what are you planning to write about?'' Anne asked.
''I don't know yet, I don't think I have half the creativity of you Anne''
''don't flatter me Blythe, we both know you're the smartest boy in the class'' Anne said as she rolled her eyes.
''Ah yes, but in no way am I the smartest in the class, that title as you so deliberately have told me belongs to you''
''Can't argue about that'' Anne said
A smile creeps upon their faces as their eyes linger wistfully looking at each other.
''Well let the writing begin'' he said dramatically which made Anne giggle.
They began writing, reading back sentences to each other, feeding off each other's ideas, goofily acting out the scenes.
''Not that I don't enjoy your company, but I am curious on why you're not with Diana'' Gilbert said as Anne scribbled on her paper.
''She said she had a family picnic'' she said not looking away from her paper.
''In this weather? On a school day?'' Gilbert said
Anne looked up from her paper ''Come to think of it, it doesn't make much sense does it?'' Anne raises her eyebrows.
''What are you suggesting Shirley?'' Gilbert asked with adventure written over his eyes.
Anne smiled as she dropped her pencil and took Gilbert's hand and led him off the house. He laughed as she dragged him off the house into the woods. They both looked down and realized they were both still holding hands and let go abruptly.
''Umm I think I saw go her this way'' Anne said as Gilbert followed her.
They walked for a few minutes until they reached a small creak and heard laughter. Anne stopped and put up her hand to insinuate for Gilbert to stop too. They hid behind a bush and looked through the leaves and found a boy and a girl talking as they soaked their feet in the water. Gilbert and Anne exchanged a look as they both realized who it was, in front of them was Diana Barry and Jerry Barnard in some sort of date. Before Gilbert could stop her Anne stood up and confronted the couple
''DIANA BARRY, MY KINDRED SPIRIT, MY BOSOM FRIEND'' Anne exclaimed.
Diana looked back, shock written all over her face ''Anne what are you doing here, and who's behind the bush?''
Gilbert stepped out of the bush, as a smirk plastered Diana's face ''So you and Gilbert were hanging out?''
''It's not like that. Wait don't change the subject!'' Anne looked at Jerry who seemed to be hiding behind Diana '' Why didn't you tell me you were going on a date with Diana?'' Anne said as she crossed her arms.
''Must've not crossed my mind'' Jerry said as he scratched the back of his neck.
''So this is a date?'' Diana asked Jerry, completely forgetting Anne and Gilbert
''Well yes of course, did you think it was not?''
''Well you never really said the word 'date' so I wasn't quite sure'' Diana says
They both awkwardly stared at each other.
''HELLO?!?'' Anne says as she waves her hand
''Oh right, yes I'm sorry Anne you just seemed so busy these past days, I've barely had time to talk to you'' Diana says apologetically
''I'm never busy for you Diana, you're my bosom friend. That will never change'' Anne said as they both embraced.
''Well I'll leave you too it'' Anne said as they broke off their hug. ''Let's go Gilbert, leave these two to chase their romantical feelings for each other''
Gilbert smiled as he waved goodbye to Diana and Jerry.
''Well I would call that a successful mission'' Gilbert joked
''We make a good team, Blythe''
''Sure, do Shirley''
