Chapter XIV – Alone in Company
Dian
It was weird feeling alone. Gyrin had two personalities in one body, a wild little kid to a wise old guy trapped within him. With Anthony going mad, Dian was beginning to realize just how defenseless and helpless they were wandering around.
"I killed her, I killed them. Its all my fault." Anthony mumbled behind her. Gyrin lead him through the fog. His patience waring thin.
"Its not your fault," Gyrin whispered. How many times had he said that trying to reassure him? This was reality and it was looking less and less like one but more like a nightmare.
Lost in her thoughts and not being able to see to well in the fog, Dian tripped and landed on the rocky ground.
"Yes it is!" Anthony screamed.
Something rumbled like a truck’s engine. Dian didn’t try to get up, just stayed still and listened but nothing could be heard but the thrashing behind her.
"No its not! We’re not dead, its not your fault!" Gyrin yelled, finally snapping. Being on edge could make you lose yourself, even fey.
The stick that Dian fell over on moved beneath her and slithered away. The engine noise grew louder. Slowly as if in a trance she got up and followed the sound up. She could see the red scales on a tail as it moved away, she followed it up to a tree where It grew in size and wrapped itself around it.
"Gyrin," Dian whispered. The thrashing stopped and Gyrin followed her gaze.
"Run," he adviced and yanked Anthony to his feet.
The Wyrm hissed and spat something at them that sizzled when it came to contact on the ground. Trees crashed and cracked as it hurried behind them.
"Gyrin, the sword!" Dian yelled.
"We’re dead anyways!" Gyrin yelled back.
Looking over her shoulder, Gyrin dragged Anthony like doll but made no move to get his sword.
The Wyrm spat acid again, this time it landed way to close for safety. "Get in the house!" Gyrin yelled. Dian hadn’t noticed the shack.
She didn’t care who it belonged to, just that it would provide shelter from the Wyrm and it wouldn’t tear it apart.
She dived for it and threw the door wide open and crashed on to the floor in the dirt that had collected through the years.
A shrieking hiss rung out and Dian found the Wyrm rebounded off the house. A bluish force field shielded them from it. Anthony laid on the floor groaning beside her.
"Where are we?" Dian asked getting up. The house was beat up, run down and just a shack. They stood in the kitchen were mold grew around the sink, floor and walls. The den was still furniturished but moth eaten and dust covered it completely.
Everything was still there like someone had just disappeared from it out of nowhere.
"Its some kind of portal. A safe heaven. I thought it was a myth, in till now."
"Whatever it is, its keeping him out. Let’s wait up here till he leaves." Dian suggested and walked in to the den. The carpet had been eaten away and bore holes, not just down to the wood but all the way through.
Gyrin untied Anthony for the time being.
"Well aren’t you a pretty thing?" A unknown voice echoed through the house. Dian searched the shack. In the far corner, concealed by shadows, a large cat with blue eyes glowered at her. It was the only other living thing present.
