Hospitals and Overcast days

She looked up.

All she could see were blue eyes. They were blurry and almost ethereal, glowing in the dull grey background. Their eyes did not break the gaze. She could see the light aqua colors of the iris emitting a trail of soft glowing blue that seemed to be meandering towards her in a spiraled pathway.

Just as she was about to flinch from the tickling sensation that seemed to randomly materialize within her gut,

Ella sat straight up in her bed.

She inspected her surroundings, and after a moment of feeling like she didn't know where she was, she figured out that she was in her room. Well, the new one.

The room was so plain and dull that after the dream Ella had had about those colors, it felt like it was not worthy to be acknowledged by her eyes. There were taped cardboard boxes lying everywhere and the only adornments in the room so far were the silver curtains hanging above the window, and the fluffy white carpet that lay sprawled at the end of her bed. Everything was still as she'd left it.

And then she saw the man.

He had a deep scar that ran diagonally across his face, intercepting with another lighter scar that slid vertically down the right side of his forehead. His eyes were as black as night and he was the type of pale that you wouldn't even see in dead people. He stood quietly in the corner of her room, staring at her with a flame of curiosity burning in his eyes. His body was tall and slender and he was wearing a black baroque suit with a red satin tie. He clearly cared very much about his appearance.

It took awhile for Ella to realize that this man was not in her room for any benevolent reasons. The expression on his face exuded mischief.

Ella's mind eventually caught on, and she instinctively let out a loud yelp. The man reacted by slowing stepping away from the dark corner he had been residing in and advanced towards her.

She backed up against the bed's headrest, staring at the man with wild eyes. She was helpless and vulnerable and there was no where to run.

The man continued forward, until he was just one meter away from Ella. He reached out towards her as if he were planning to steal her like she was a sack of money and just as he attempted to take hold of her hand,

Ella jolted awake.

She was now not in her room at all.

She must have been in a hospital because she could hear the banausic 'beep' of a heart monitor nearby. Eventually her drowsiness dispersed and she opened her eyes.

Ella looked around.

The room had a warm mocha beige wall with an abundance of colorful posters filled with information about healthy eating pasted onto it with prestik.

Her dad was dozing away in a cushioned seat in the corner.

There was a vase filled with so many flowers in it, that she swore the porcelain would crack at any given moment.

What had happened?

And then Ella started to remember the gang, her rescuer, and the herd of deer. She recalled how she had hit the breaks and become unsuccessful in safely halting on the slippery ice-coated road. The car had luckily not rolled over but Ella was sure she must have hit her head hard against the steering wheel because she could not remember anything after slamming the breaks.

The door opened widely and a doctor walked into the room carrying a check board and some medication.

"Ahh Ella, you're awake! How do you feel?" He spoke avidly.

She looked around once more before murmuring a silent "I'm okay thanks."

"I am Doctor Redfield" he continued on, "and I'm just going to check your stats so I can determine whether the medication we've been giving you is doing its job" the doctor spoke politely. "You were in a minor car accident and we've diagnosed you with a slight concussion resulting in a subsidiary amount of head trauma".

"In 'normal people terms', you're very lucky", A deep voice sprouted from inside the room.

Ella looked to the direction of the source and saw a young man with tanned skin, chocolate brown hair and hazel eyes standing in the doorway.

"Jordan, you're supposed to be helping the nurses in East wing!", Dr Redfield boomed.

"Sorry doc, I can't help it that the Universe keeps attracting me to beautiful women in hospital robes" he looked towards Ella and smirked.

If she'd ever thought that it was impossible to blush after being in a car accident, it was now that she managed to prove herself very wrong.

"I'm giving you ten seconds to get to where you're supposed to be, or else you can say goodbye to that scholarship!", "Have you no limits Jordan?" Dr Redfield grew agitated.

"The sky's my limit doc" Jordan said playfully before winking at Ella and gracefully swerving out of the doorway.

"I'm sorry about that" he said, "sometimes our interns can be a little bit, out of control".

Ella didn't pay much attention to what he said or did after. She had a vexatious ache in her head and she really hated hospitals.

***

Dr Redfield had finished all the tests and Ella's health was up to standard. She would be discharged today. Her father had woken up a few hours ago and they'd had a light but hearty conversation together.

Eventually they headed out to the admin counter and checked out.

Ella was thankful that she could escape the building's atmosphere, which hung with the odors of death and sterility. Apparently a few other people were involved in car accidents that same day because of thick layers of ice that had formed over the roads overnight, making them impossibly slippery.

She wasn't concerned about the car crash.

She wasn't even concerned about the gang of mundane boys she'd encountered that day.

Just him.

They started the twenty minute drive back home from the hospital. It was overcast today like it was almost everyday. Ella could already see her golden tan diminishing to a pale yellow. She had that 'old pancake' skin color now.

Her mind drifted to various silly topics. Like how beautiful she actually found this little town to be, and whether she would ever make any friends at school and manage to build a small life for herself during the two years she'd be living here.

She started rethinking her whole life, remembering her first prom. She'd gone with Anthony, who was her best guy friend back in California. Her mom had taken like five-hundred pictures of them and made them late. They danced, laughed and joked around together and afterwards they went to Anthony's house, which was huge, and smoked some joints and ate brownies on his roof.

It had been one of the most fun nights of her life.

She thought about all her old friends. Daphney, who always took selfies with people, Cassandra, with her long wavy hair, Shena who always posted pictures of her meals on Facebook, Denise, Callie, Sam and Anthony.

Ella realized how much she missed them. She definitely needed to arrange a trip to California this holiday.

They arrived home and Ella was grateful that she could just lie down on her bed and do absolutely nothing.

This week had been a rollercoaster.

*hey guys so I know this chapter was a little boring but keep reading on! It gets exciting. Please vote and comment! It would mean a lot to me and I'm willing to do the same for you guys. Once again I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors.
