February;

Brielle Sommers, the newest resident of the south side of Chicago, sat atop her roof with a cigarette hanging out of her cherry chapstick coated lips. The smoke swirled slowly around her as she exhaled, eventually evaporating into the cold nights air. Hugging her jacket close to her torso, her eyes locked onto the barely-visible moon as she took another large drag from the bad habit that was placed between her lips.

"So this is Chicago, huh." She breathed to the silent city around her, a wave of home-sickness came crashing down, suddenly making it hard to breathe. Tears glazed over her eyes that she quickly blinked away, completely unaware of the unfolding chaos that was taking place just below her in the Sommer's living room.

Thoughts of how school was going to be, how her little brother was going to adjust, and who she was going to meet danced through her mind in a mix of curiosity, excitement and nervousness.

A sudden burst of loud, angry voices echoed throughout the night, tearing Brielle from her smoke-break daydream. She carefully jumped to her feet, her eyes scanning the streets for the source of the violence when a slamming door vibrated somewhere beneath her. With an exaggerated sigh, the girl flicked her burning cigarette into the yard somewhere below her. "Please don't be fighting, please." Brielle pleaded with the sky.

"Cameron, get your ass back here right now!" The rough, angry voice of her mother, Diane Sommers, met her ears, confirming that her mother and her younger brother were fighting, again.

"I hate you!" The young boy screamed as tears fell from his sad eyes, running down his reddened cheeks. Cameron Sommers, the youngest of the Sommers trio, hopped onto his neon green BMX bike and pedaled off into the night.

"Cameron!" Brielle screamed from the rooftop, trying to get her younger brothers attention before he completely disappeared into the darkness. "What the fuck." Brielle exclaimed as she glanced at her phone to check the time; 11:17 pm. The frantic girl climbed through a window that lead into her bedroom before racing down the stairs to face her mother. Anger boiled Brielle's blood the instant she stepped outside to see her mother parked on the porch steps with silent tears pouring down her cheeks.

"Seriously mom?" Brielle fumed as she slammed the door shut behind her. "You look really concerned that your eleven year old son just took off in the dead of the night in a neighborhood we've barely been in for a week!"

Diane remained silent, her eyes locked on the icy sidewalk that lead to their front porch as more tears fell. At this point, Brielle's anger had developed into fear for her brothers safety. She knew she had more important things to do than to stand there and argue with someone who only cared about themself. Because time was of the essence, Brielle took off in a dead sprint in the same direction as her brother.
