Why did my dad have to call? My life couldn't get any worse. And we still haven't found Katelyn.
I'm sitting on couch in Eric's living room. Aphmau is in Katelyn's room, frantically searching through all Katie's hiding spots. There is nothing I can do now. I've never felt this useless. Well almost never.
Aaron comes out of the kitchen where he was talking with Eric. His steps are slow, like every movement is paining him.
"Travis," he says. His voice is sober.
"Is something wrong? Did something happen?" I ask, panicked. My heart is thumping like a drum.
"What, no!" Aaron says. He shakes his head. "Nothing?"
He's lying. He looks like he wants to cry. I take a deep breath.
"Aaron?"
His eyes snap up.
"I need to talk to Aph. Sorry, Travis." He walks quicker, leaving my question unanswered. I sigh and sit back down.
I'm exhausted. Where are you, Katelyn? Where are you? I look up at the celling, before closing my eyes.
There is a quiet noise. I open my eyes. Eric just placed a sandwich in front of me. I look at him, my eyes questioning him.
Eric sighs as he sits on the couch across from me.
"You need to eat, Travis," he says. He sounds tired. He's been so good at hiding his emotions, but now I can sense that he's tired.
"Thank you," I say and I bite into the sandwich half heartily. I'm not that hungry even though I haven't eaten since last night.
We sit there awkwardly. I've never been awkward with Eric, well apart from the first few times I met him. But now I can't think of anything to say. I can only think one thought.
Where are you, Katie?
"She really loves you, you know," Eric says suddenly. I look at him.
"Huh?"
"Katie. She would always talk about you, always brighten up at the mention of your name."
"Then why's she break it off?" It's the question that I've been pushing back, trying to forget. But it's the truth. She broke it off. I want to find her. I need to find her.
Even if she doesn't want me.
"I don't know," Eric says, shaking his head. I feel my eyes begin to water. Why am I crying now? Is it because I've been thinking about those words, about her ending it? "I didn't think she could live without you."
Now I know why I'm I'm crying. It's because it's settling in. I'm not crying because I'm thinking of the breakup, but because some how just now I've realized that I will have to live without Katelyn.
"I guess she can."
Eric shakes his head.
"Katie never thought things through. Never. I think she made a mistake. But she has to much pride. Just like me," Eric says, laughing a slightly broken laugh.
"I think your not that prideful or temperamental," I say. And it's true.
"That's because you've never seen me loose it."
We sit there awkwardly again.
"I remember when I first met you Travis. A little fourteen year old."
I remember that too. I was so nervous about meeting Katelyn's dad.
"I was so against Katie dating. But when I met you, I saw the way you looked at her. And I saw the way she looked at you. You were different then Jeffery or Kai. And then I knew. That you would make her happy and really, that's all that matters."
I smile. The tears are slowly dripping. Back then, I didn't think I would be were I am now.
Sitting on the couch, searching for Katelyn.
Suddenly, I hear loud Spanish. Aphmau and Aaron. They are both fluent in Spanish. Aphmau's mom is Spanish as is Aaron's.
"I can't believe it!" Aphmau screeches.
"Aphmau," I hear Aaron say. And the he says something in Spanish that I don't understand.
Aphmau comes stomping out, her face red, the floor shaking beneath her feet.
"Aphmau, what is it?" Eric says jumping to his feet. Angry tears are dripping down her face.
"Es una estúpida Ivy! Ella vio los papeles de las personas desaparecidas de Katelyn y ahora está difundiendo rumores estúpidos. Oh, ella me enoja tanto!"
"What!" Eric and I exclaim. Aphmau's foot hits the floor as she stomps it, shaking the vase.
"It's a stupid Ivy! She saw the papers of the missing people of Katelyn and now she is spreading stupid rumors. Oh, she makes me so angry!"
"Is that what Aaron wouldn't tell me," I say. Eric presses his lips together.
"No, that's.... that's something else," her voice trails off.
"What is it!"
"Look, Travis, it's nothing to do with Katelyn..."
"Aphmau!"
"It's Aaron's dad. Derek was in a car accident."
