Donna is getting on my nerves. She acts like I'm the bad friend, like I'm not Katie's oldest friend.
She acts like I'm not a mother.
She's rocking Abby as we watch Katelyn sing. When watching her I can't help but smile. She use to never sing for anyone except for her family and I. We were the only ones. The only ones to hear her powerful voice.
Just like she is the only one who heard mine.
My phone vibrates in my pocket as I take a bite of one of the cafe's delectable lemon poppy seed muffins.
"Hold on," I say mostly to Travis. Travis nods, absentmindedly. His whole focus is on Katelyn. I push my chair back, cringing at the screech. I walk outside the cafe and go sit on a yellow park bench. I smile as I see Katelyn through the window. I click answer on my phone.
"Hello, Aphmau here?" I forgot to look at the caller id, so I have no idea who it is. That was stupid of me.
"Hey, Aph." Kasey? Kasey!
"Kase, we found Katie!"
"What! Really! Where?"
"O'Kasis. We are here with her in O'Kasis."
"You didn't bring me?"
Guilt claws at my stomach. Oops. Saying I forgot would not only be cruel, but mean.
"Sorry, Kasey. There was no time."
"Uhuh." Desperate to change the subject, I try to think of something else to say.
"Well, why did you call?" I ask. I can almost feel Kasey go white. "Kase?"
"It's... it's.... Travis's dad..."
"What???" Panic fills me and I feel panic rises and I'm sure it shows in my voice.
"He's bailed himself out of jail and he's requesting to see Travis." I almost drop my phone.
"El no puede verlo! No te acuerdas?"
"Huh?" People give me weird looks. I ignore them. I close my eyes, leaning my head back. I'm already picturing, already remembering Travis coming to school, hiding cuts and bruises. I remember the bad days. Travis hasn't lived with his dad for years. And he hasn't seen him since he was sixteen.
"He can't go see him. He can't. No lo permitiré! No!"
"I know, he can't force him too either. Travis is legally an adult isn't he? But Terry knows where he lives, doesn't he?"
"Surely, Terry is under some type of security?"
"Money can buy anything, even corruption. I'm really scared for Trav."
I fiddle with the edge of my skirt. I can picture Kasey biting his lip. It's a nervous habit that all the Fier's have. Eric, Katelyn, Kasey, all of them. Just like Ángel thing chew on their hair. Which I am doing now. I spit it out.
"I have an idea." I'd have to ask Katie and Donna. But it could work.
"What is it?" Kasey says. I take a deep breath and explain the plan to him.
"Sounds good."
"You can't tell anyone. Promise me," I say, my voice is desperate.
"Promise, Aph. You should stay out there for a little bit. Aaron is coming."
"Wait what?"
"See ya, Aph. Tell my sister I say hi." Beep. He hangs up. I open my eyes and stare up at the sky. My Irene I hope this works. And Aaron. Why is he coming? Never less, Aaron is coming. No matter how dire the situation, that thought almost always makes me smile.
"Disculpe, querida, conoce el camino a la conveniencia de Leander?" A kind, worn out voice says. I look down. An elderly woman with silver hair, holding a small boy with dark features' hand and carrying another young child, a girl in her arms. Her face was worn and tires.
"No, señora, lo siento."
"You from Spain too?" the little boy asks. I shook my head.
"My Abuela and my Madre. My fiancé familia too."
"Familia name?" the old woman asks. Probably to see if she knows them.
"Lycan y Ángel." I say. Her face shows no recollection. "I must go. Sorry I was no help." They look confused. I repeat my sentence in Spanish. I stand up off the bench. Before I leave, I reach into my pocket and pull out a twenty dollar bill. I press it into the little boy's hand.
"Oh, no," the woman protest. I can see her cracked lips and I can hear their rumbling stomachs. I remember my mother describing her childhood to me, the awful hungry days. I don't want anyone to feel that way ever.
"Not charity," I say. "Gift." The woman smiles at me.
"Gracias." The little boy gives me a hug. I hug him back.
"Adios," I say, waving as I walk back into the cafe. My smile fades and my steps become heavy. I have to tell Travis. I have too."What?" Travis says, shock in his eyes. And fear. Travis hates his dad, but he also fears him. "How could??" His voice breaks. Donna gives him a hug, her kind eyes filled with concern.
"It's okay, darling." I exhale sharply. Donna really did get on my nerves.
"You don't want to see him right?"
Travis closes his eyes and nods. Katelyn bites her lip. I surprised she hadn't chewed it off by now.
"But, honey, if your father wants to see you, surely you should go." I glare sharply, with what Aaron calls the wolf's glare, at Donna. Katelyn shifts her grip on Abby, putting an arm around me as if to hold me back. Which is laughable. I use to hold her back.
"Somethings are not like others," I say quietly. Donna hears it.
"Yes, but family is family. If someone from my family called, I would..."
"You don't get it do you?" Katelyn says angrily. Now it's my turn to hold her back, even though I'm just as mad. We are inside the cafe, in the back while Katelyn takes her break. No one can hear us.
"Travis's dad is an awful person, how can you just assume!"
"He means he's abusive," Travis whispers, a silent tear running down his face.
"My plan is that you stay here. With Katie. Because he knows where your apartment is Trav."
"What!" Donna exclaims. Katelyn takes a deep breath.
"Works for me. Anything for you," Katie agrees.
"This needs more thought!" Donna says, worriedly.
"We don't have more time," I snap. Breathe, Aphmau, I tell myself. Breathe.
Donna sighs.
"It's fine. But he's sleeping on the couch. We all know what happened the last time you slept together."
Travis and Katelyn blush. I laugh a tight strained laugh.
"It's fine. Besides, I think that Katie and I may be having a sleepover tonight."
"Really?" Katelyn says. "Don't you have to go..."
"No. Aaron and Alina are coming here."*****
