"You can't just go to O'Kasis!" Lucinda argued. I sigh with frustration.
"Come on, Lucy!" I say exasperated. Lucinda is the only one of us with her full license and a car. Well I guess Garroth has a car, but he's out of town right now.
"Travis, that's like a fourteen hour drive!"
"It's fifteen and a half hours actually," Aaron falls out from the other room.
We are at Lucinda's apartment. Aaron's making lunch with Alina and Aphmau and I we failing to convince Lucinda to take us to O'kasis. Failing. One thing Lucy and Katie has in common was their extreme stubbornness. Aphmau throws a pillow towards the kitchen.
"Not helpful, babe."
"Please, Lucinda. If this is Katelyn." I give her puppy eyes. She looks away.
"Travis, trust me, I want to find Katelyn as much as you do, but we can't just drive up to O'kasis without any preparation."
"Come on, Luce!" Aph says throwing another pillow at her. Even though the situation is kinda serious, I stifle a laugh as the pillow smacks Lucinda in the face. Aph is acting like a toddler. Kinda like Alina.
"Not funny Aphmau Irene," Lucinda mumbles.
"Well if you won't take us, can we at least borrow your car?"
"Absolutely not. I've seen both of you drive and that is a nightmare. Why doesn't Aaron take you? He has his full license doesn't he."
I look down at my fingers. I see out of the corner of my eye, Aphmau look away. It's been over six months since Derek died, but Aaron can't drive. He can't bring himself to do it. Aphmau has told me about the nightmares and the panic attacks. She's told me how Alina still asks when she will see her grandpa. And it breaks my heart. Because it's my dad's fault.
The kitchen grows silent.
"Oh," Lucinda whispers. I look up at her. Her cheeks are flushed. "Sorry, I... I forgot." Aphmau looks up at her.
We have to go to O'kasis today. I can't lose Katelyn. We've found her. I can't lose her. I just can't.
It's like Lucinda read my mind.
"Fine. I'll take you guys to O'kasis," she says softly. I feel hope rise up in my chest. The mood in the room shifts. The floorboards creak as I jump out of my chair and run to Lucinda. I embrace her.
"Thank you, thank you," I whisper. Aphmau's come over here too. Lucinda's eyes shine with tears.
"We are going to go get Katie back." Aphmau squeezes my hand. We will get her back.
I'm going to see my Katie again.I sit in the back seat of Lucinda's car beside her stuffy spider she has in the backseat for some reason. It's almost a exact replica of her tarantula, Uwu.
I can't sit still. We move been driving for fourteen hours now. I slept for about three, but I can't fall asleep again. I going to see my Katie. I'm going to see Katelyn.
My Irene, I'm going to go see Katelyn.
Suddenly nerves hit me. It's been a year since I saw her. What will I say? What shall I do?
"Are we there yet!" Aphmau asks?
"No," Lucinda says crankily. She hasn't slept in a long time now. "Travis, stop doing that!" She sips her coffee. I freeze. Doing what?
"Huh?" I say, confused.
"Bouncing your leg!"
"Sorry," I look down at my lap. Lucinda sighs.
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't of snapped at you. I'm just tired."
"I can drive?" Aphmau offers.
"You don't even have your full license yet," I remind her.
"Yeah, but I'm allowed to drive two people who aren't family!"
"No, I'm fine. I'll drive ," Lucy says, sighing. I forgot my nervousness for a minute, but now it's back. My phone goes off.
I pull it out from my winter coat pocket. There's no snow outside and I'm glad. I hate driving in the snow.
I look at my phone.
It's Kasey.
I swear loudly.
"What is it?" Lucinda asks, just as Aph says,
"You are so lucky Alina's not in the car."
We aren't suppose to swear in front of Alina.
"We forgot Kasey. We should of brought Kasey!"
Aphmau swears. This is the first time I've heard her swear in a long time. Not that she use to do it often, but since Alina was born, she just stopped.
I can't believe we forgot Kasey. He wants to see his sister. He misses her so badly, just as bad as I do.
"Well it is too late now," Lucinda says. "I am not driving back to Phoniex Drop."
"I know." I see Aph close her eyes from her reflection in the mirror. "I just can't believe we didn't think about bringing him!"
We sit in silence, the only sound is the roar of the engine.
"Guys," I say after the silence gets to much. "Are you guys nervous."
"Yeah," Lucinda says.
"Yeah," Aphmau agrees. "It's been so long..."
"Uhuh," I agree. It has been. It's been to long.
"Are you nervous about meeting your baby?" Lucinda asks.
The baby. I'm a father. It never felt as real as it does now. Katelyn ran away because she was pregnant. Is it a girl or a boy? What's the name?
"Yeah. I don't think I've ever been more nervous."
"It'll be fine," Aphmau says, although it sounds more like she's trying to reassure herself.
"Yeah," I say. And I hope it will.We arrive in O'kasis late morning.
"This is Firefist." Lucinda sounds exhausted as she pulls into a parking spot. My heart pound. We are here. We are here.
Aphmau steps out of the car first. Then Lucinda. I take a deep breath. I can do this. I'm going to see Katelyn.
I follow them out of the car.
The apothecary is a small building, or at least smaller than any of the other buildings on this street. Lucinda squints at the sign on the door.
"Closed. Apartment doors around back."
We don't know which apartment Katelyn is in. I realize this now. Are plan is so flawed. What if it isn't Katelyn? Do we even have a plan? No. So many things could go wrong. I almost don't want to go into the apartments, because I'm afraid that we will be wrong. But my longing to see Katelyn our ways that feeling. So I walk around back with Lucinda and Aphmau. Lucinda has dark circles around her eyes.
"We are going to find her," Aphmau whispers. She takes my hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. One, two, three, four, five, I count as we walk up the carpeted stairs inside the building. Six, seven, eight....
We reach the top of the stairs quickly. There's another floor, above this one, but the door to the stairs is locked.
"I guess we knock?" Aphmau shrugs. Lucy rubs her eyes, sleepily as she nods.
There's only three apartments, which lowers the chance of us knocking on the wrong one. I feel my anxiety lessen.
We walk up to the first apartment and knock. Nothing. I feel my heart drop. We wait. Aphmau knocks again.
Nothing.
We walk up to the door labeled two next. My heart is pounding so loudly I'm sure you could here it all the way in Starlight.
Aphmau knocks on the door, once than twice. I hear feet running towards us and I feel my heart rise.
It sinks back down when a teenage girl opens it.
"Hi, I'm Kitty? Can I help you?"
"Yes. We are looking for a Katelyn?"
Aphmau says nervously. Katelyn. Maybe we should say her last name? Fier?
"Oh do you mean Katie Lynne?"
Aphmau nods. That's the name Katelyn went by in the video, I realize.
"Sorry, she doesn't really take visitors from her fans, but she is returning to preform tomorrow for the first time in two months so I'm sure you can see her..."
"We're her friends," Lucinda interrupts.
"I'm afraid I can't just let you in because you say that???"
"Please," I beg. We've come so far. "Please. We came all the way from Phoenix Drop. Please."
The girl bites her lip. Please. I beg silently.
She nods. I feel my heart soar.
"Thank you."
"Travis?" I look up. There standing in the hallway was Katie. She looks shocked to see me. "Travis, what on earth are you doing here!"
"What on earth are you doing here!" Aphmau cries out. She looks mad now. Her features have been masked with anger. "You just leave like that! What the heck, Katelyn!"
"You weren't suppose to come here."
The girl, Kitty, looks so confused.
"We've spent months looking for you! Months. You can't just take off and start a new life!"
"Aph, it's okay," Lucinda whispers.
"No! It isn't!" She turns to face Katelyn. "Katie Lynne, my butt. How could you do this! We've been worried sick about you!"
"It's none of your business, Aphmau!"
"Yes it is! Do you know how much pain you've caused. We thought you were dead!"
"ENOUGH!" a loud voice says. A mousy haired woman stands in the middle of the stairwell.
"Donna!" Katelyn says.
"Katie, what is going on!"
"I-I-I," Katelyn stutters.
"I think we all must go inside and talk the civilized humans. Besides if you scream at each other, you'll wake the baby."
Baby. Katie looks up at me. Baby. My baby.
"Yes, Donna. You are right."
I can't believe this. I just can't. I can't believe Aphmau and Katelyn just fought. I can't believe what just happens. I can't believe we found Katelyn.
