"i already befriended your mom last night."

Kris didn't know what it was about this skeleton that struck them as so familiar. Something about his face. Something about his terrible humour. Something about the way they found him leaning against a doorframe doing nothing at all. Something about how predictable it was that he'd say he was on break.

Something started a burning in their soul that made them think they'd met before. He claimed to not recognise them, but of course he did. He had to.

Kris also felt something else. A surge of disgust as he stood there smiling. He didn't seem to care about how awful it was to tell a little kid that you fucked their mother.

"she's really nice. she came in for some chocolate kisses." Sans clarified. Kris knew his name was Sans because it was plastered about him in squiggly handwriting. But something told them they already knew it before that. "she says she has to lock them up to stop you from eating them."

Kris smiled a bit. That was true. Something told them Sans should know about Alphys as well. They told him about her.

"alphys?" Sans smiled even more. "i know her. she came into the store once with a black suitcase looking all shady. i thought she was about to rob me or something. instead she just stuffed it full of instant ramen, payed entirely in paper bills and left. she's nice."

Kris smiled and bid goodbye. They started to walk away, but Sans stopped them before they did. "hey, can you do me a favour tomorrow? i need you to do something for me."

Kris sighed, not really wanting to. "Sure. What is it?"

"oh, i don't know. I won't be there. it'll just be you and my little brother."

Papyrus.

"his name's papyrus. he's an angel, you don't need to look so worried. he can't hurt you even if he wanted to."

It wasn't that. Papyrus's name came to Kris so quick they almost said it out loud. They had no idea how they knew it, or why they could picture a smiling face offering them a hug. And they didn't know why that image made their heart pound. But it did. And it scared them.

"actually, you look really startled. you've gone all pale, kid. you good?"

"I-"

"You look like you've seen a ghost."

Kris didn't say anything and just walked away.

"so it's a deal then? cool, see ya tomorrow."

They felt like they had seen a ghost. They didn't know why, but they felt like they'd done something really horrible to Sans and Papyrus before, and they didn't know what it was, but they felt horrible.

They trudged on home, handing a bouquet of flowers from their dad to their mom, and went straight to bed. They didn't feel well. There, they thought over the events of the day.

They woke up that morning and went to school. Miss Alphys had lost the chalk, so they went with Susie to get some. Susie had been eating the chalk all along and she threatened Kris but then decided to show mercy. Kris followed Susie to the storage closet and fell into the Dark World. There, they met Ralsei and Lancer.

Papyrus.

Along the way they also met Seam, the old shop keeper and K.round, who ruined a whole twenty minutes of their life. Susie betrayed them and became Lancer's best and only friend. Then, they met Jevil.

Sans.

Jevil demanded a fight. He was insane, but also provided great entertainment. Eventually, after dying countless times, Kris put him to sleep for the next hundred years. Then, they fought Lancer's dad.

Asriel.

And eventually, closed the fountain that was about to ruin the world. Then, they had gone home, had a chat with Noelle's dad at the hospital and ran into Sans. Then, they ended up at home.

They fell asleep, and into a dream.

They were watching something. Someone in a purple shirt, holding a plastic knife, standing in front of a tall skeleton, with his arms outstretched, offering a hug.

He was stricken down. His entire body collapsed into dust, save for his head.

"STILL. I BELIEVE IN YOU. YOU CAN DO A LITTLE BETTER, EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK SO. I- I PROMISE."

The human in the striped shirt stomped on his head suddenly. There was a loud crack, then he faded away for good. Kris was shaking, sweating, heart pounding.

See that, Kris? That's a monster. They collected souls for me to use. They used to provide the vessel for my own soul. But now, I'm too strong for them. I need another vessel.

Kris woke up suddenly. They rolled out of bed, clutching their chest. Their soul was in a pain they'd never felt before. It was indescribable.

You'll suit me just fine. But I will need more souls to stay complete.

Kris suddenly stretched their hand out. They couldn't control their own body. How could they when they couldn't even breath. They dug their hand into their chest against their will. They opened their mouth to scream in pain, but a strange controlling sensation took all noise from them and just left them silent.

Can't have you screaming. Your mother might hear. It's lucky none of the monsters in this universe have souls of use to me. Especially when I already have them all. There's only one that really interests me.

Kris launched their soul into the birdcage in their room. It was suddenly engulfed by a big shadow. The shadow stretched to form a person with no feature save from a red smile and set of eyes on their face. Kris didn't realize, but they were holding up a knife. The same knife that had killed that monster, probably.

I am You, Kris. Now...

A soul appeared beside the thing in front of them. It glowed a bit, then shone bright in the center of a transparent figure. Behind him, a giant skeleton skull appeared, it's mouth agape and glowing blue.

Say hello to Papyrus for me.

Then there was nothing.
