Alex's POV
How do you act normal?
I mean, how do you act normal in front of a (beautiful) girl and act all cool about it. When really, probably any second now she's going to be gone.
She could've died in 30 minutes. In the morning, in an hour, in a few days, seconds...
I just don't know how I'll be able to handle it if she went away. She is definitely an important person in my life.
I squeezed the cross necklace around my neck my mom gave to me as a baby. 'For Luck' she had said. I squeezed it one last time and put it under my t-shirt. I then ringed on the doorbell to Leslie's house.
I kept knocking and ringing, ringing and knocking. No one answered. Leslie is always home alone for a few hours until Ashley comes at 4:00pm so it was weird that she didn't open the door. Immediately, I thought of the worse.
And in a snap, I ran to the big maple tree and climbed up. I've fallen some times, but I was more worried about Leslie than the bruises on my arms and legs.
I balanced myself on the branch and carefully opened the window and threw myself in. Luckily, Leslie's floor has a carpet.
"Who's there!" Leslie yelled I slowly stood up and avoided yelling in pain as i saw Leslie on the bed. She doesn't seem hurt. Thank God.
I walked up to her and sat next to her on the bed. She was shacking uncontrolably."Its okay," i say with a reasuring voice while I grab her shoulders and sooth her "Its just me. Alex"
Her whole body calmed down on my touch she breathed normally now. "Alex!" she hissed quietly "you could of scared me to death!"
"Don't say that!" i snapped "ever!"
Silence surrounded the room. And now I felt kinda angry at myself for snapping at her. I know she didn't mean it, she meant it as a saying. But i just can't hide the fact that in any day, she'll die.
"What?" she says freaked out "why are you staring at me like that?"
That was when i let go of her and blinked. 'if only you knew'
"Never mind," I say more serious "A better question is, why are you here. At least open the door for me. I just climbed a tree for you!"
"Thanks for that" she says from her soft laughing "and there was a problem"
"What type of problem" I asked more concered.
"I'm sorry i didn't open the door," she says weakly, slowly closing her eyes and opening them again. I became more concered and waited for her to speak again "Its just..."
"what?" i interrupted
She yawned loudly and stretched her arms out. "I was so tired... Seriously, I couldn't get up. All my strength... gone"
This was only the beggining, I thought with shocked eyes. She saw me doing this so i relaxed and gave her a warm smile. I wondered if i should tell her.
Again. I saw her opening and closing her eyes. This pained me even more. I'm not ready to say good-bye yet.
"Well then," I say in a cheerful voice, trying to lighten up the mood "I'll just stay here until your sister comes, okay?" She nooded her head and gave a weak smile.
*********
A few hours have past, I spent it with Leslie as i promised myself. We talked, but it only lasted a few minutes when she stopped talking.
I thought she was dead but I stood up and gently held her hand and checked her pulse on her wrists. So i knew she was just slepping.
I spent my time wandering around, checking anything that had caught my eye. On the desks, there were stacks of paper. The curiosity just hit me, and i knew i shouldn't be doing this. But i did
I looked through all of the pages, there were all mostly drawings. One drawing that had caught my eye was one that had her signature on the bottom.
There was this bridge on the far left side of the drawing, only half of it showed. The other half was covered by little white puffy clouds. In the center of the paper, there was a garden full of flowers, from tulips, violets, roses, to these little cowbells. The sky was all covered nicely in the color of soft pink.
That's it.
And that was when i realized there was about 5 minutes left until Ashley came.
I went to Leslie's side of the bed and checked her pulse. Still breathing... Don't freak out, Alex
And in an instant, i fled downstairs. Only surprised to see that Ashley was already climbing up the stairs. I stopped and she stopped also. Time for the bad news...
"What happened?" She asked
"Its starting," I say
"What does 'Its starting' have to do with the bruises on you. Are you alright" she asks worried
"I climbed a tree to get in here. But never mind that, Ashley, Leslie is starting to feel weak... She can't even get up"
There was shock, worry, but mostly scared in her eyes. I moved out of the way and she continued running up the stairs.
I went after her, she barged into the room and went to Leslie's side of the bed. I went to the other, I kneeled down next to Leslie and looked at her.
Leslie had her silky soft brown hair, her eyelashes showed perfectly when her eyes closed like that, and i swear, i just saw a curve of her lips lift up forming a smile, but she had this tiny line under her eyes. Which showed she was tired and couldn't get enough sleep.
"Alex," Ashley says. I looked at her "can you leave us alone... please"
I can see in her eyes she wanted to cry, badly. So i stood up
"Yeah. I actually have to go to soccer practice soon. So I'll leave the door locked"
She nooded her head and I left them alone.
