Chapter 18: New Life New Rules

Walking by the shoreline Yagiz recollected when he first met Ece (after the one night stand of course, which he blurrily remembered). At his mother's wake Ece spilled some tea and broke a cup. When he heard Yasemin yelling at the young maid he stepped in. To think, that girl who was just a stranger to him at the time would become such a significant part of his life. He thought back to all his interactions with Ece: when he found her and her boyfriend after they ran away, when he chased her down in a forest during a thunderstorm, when they ran into each other at the hospital after Sinan and Hazan got into a crash, when Yasin shot her and he waited at her bedside at the hospital, when we watched her dance with his father at her wedding. All this time they were both oblivious to the fact she was carrying his child. Yagiz felt ashamed, he should have known somehow. Ece revealed to him that she even attempted suicide by nearly jumping off a cliff. He couldn't help but feel her impending future as an unwed teenage mother led her to such desperate acts. Yagiz felt a growing bitterness toward Ece over the last few weeks that she had complicated his life ever since she entered it and especially after she married his father. But perhaps it was the other way around. If they hadn't met she wouldn't be pregnant right now, she would be a normal 18 year old girl in her last semester of high school, happily dating her boyfriend Yasin. Maybe it was him that ruined her life. 

Gokhan saw Yagiz slowly walking along the shoreline face fraught with deep thought. Gokhan jogged forward to catch up to him. 

"Yagiz, you can't just run away after something like that. You have to explain yourself. You have to figure out what you're going to do now."

"Abi, I'm finding all of this out at the same time as you. I need some time to sort out my thoughts."

"How could you not know or even think she wasn't pregnant with your child, Yagiz. You slept with her!"

Yagiz explained to his older brother the  circumstances of the conception. He had a drunken one night stand with a girl about 3 months ago but he barely remembered what happened and definitely didn't remember her face. Both he and Ece discovered the truth today after connecting the dots. He also added that their father knew Ece was pregnant with someone else's child before they got married but proposed to her anyway. He proposed for sole purpose of raising that child as his own. 

"What am I supposed to do, abi? I can't be a father. She's already going to get the mansion and a  large chunk of the company shares from baba's estate. She has her mother and sister, they can raise it without me. I  don't want to be a part of that picture. I have my own life. I want to find a woman I love someday and have a family when I'm ready. I don't want to be forced to raise a child I didn't even agree to have." Yagiz felt it was unfair. His whole future would change and there was nothing he could do to stop it. 

"You know, I envy you. My little brother is becoming a father before me. Yasemin and I have been trying for the past four years to have a child but all you had to do was have drunken sex with a random girl and suddenly you're going to be a father." Yagiz knew how much his older brother wanted to be a father. Gokhan loved kids. He knew how much their fertility issues and still being childless put a strain on his brother and sister-in-law's marriage. This thing they craved and struggled to obtain Yagiz got easily and wanted to reject it. "You said baba married Ece because he wanted to give that child a good upbringing in a large warm family. Think, that was when he thought this child wasn't even related to us. What would anne and baba think if they knew you wanted to abandon their grandchild. I know this news is a shock to you just like it to the rest of us. But Yagiz, you need to man up, not because that baby is an Egemen but because that is your child. You need to take responsibility for you actions."

Fazilet was in the kitchen helping the cook prepare dinner, though it appeared she was on autopilot. Her mind was occupied with what she had just learned. Yagiz Egemen was the father of Ece's unborn child. Fazilet wasn't prepared to confront her daughter just yet on the revelation. Fazilet felt slightly relieved that isn't wasn't Yasin's child. Ece had a legitimate claim to being part of the Egemen family. If only they knew from the beginning, then Ece could have married Yagiz and not an old man like Hazim. Ece had gotten herself into a mess and this time Fazilet didn't know how to get her out.
