"Aiden, you need to move faster!" came the muffled voice of Blake as the two crawled through a tunnel big enough for only one.
They had managed to run faster than the soldiers sent after them to stop them from escaping. Aiden had been amazed at how the others had gotten through so quickly, but there were signs all over which told Aiden somehow the tunnel was shifted. Parts of the tunnel smelled of freshly turned earth and when their hands sunk slightly in the dirt. The only light in the tunnel was the one at the end which would mean the two would be free.
Aiden did his best to pick up the pace he had set, but the freshly turned earth made his hands slip. Twice now, he accidently kicked poor Blake who only mumbled something about killing him later. A soft meowing came from behind Aide, signaling Trooper was finally awake. If Trooper was already awake then they had spent a lot more time in the tunnel then Aiden had planned. Aiden felt something push against him.
"Hurry it up!" Blake was pushing him from behind.
"Oi, stop pushing before I slip again," Aiden shouted as he tried to stop Blake from pushing him.
"Then move it," Blake said as Aiden moved a little faster.
It took them a few moments to finally climb out of the tunnel covered with dirt. Huffing, Aiden waited for Blake to have Trooper blast a few flames in the tunnel. He hoped the soldiers would then back away in fear of coming any closer in case Trooper might attack again, but of course they would be long gone before then. The evening breeze was fresh and crisp on Aiden's face. He ran his fingers through his hair glad Blake had stayed behind. The clanking of armour came to his ears.
"Blake this way," Aiden hissed heading towards a group of hedges.
The castle grounds were doted with flowers, hedges, and other sources of plant life. It had been something Aiden's mother had always been fond of. When Aiden was little he would often escape his father's cruelity by hiding in the garden. His mother would find him there after she calmed his father. They would then tend to the garden until it was time for supper. Aiden smiled at the thought as he hid behind the hedge like he did so many years ago.
Blake sat there clamping his dirty hand over a struggling Trooper, who did not understand why they had to be quiet or why they had to hide. Blake swore to himself as to why he had let this little kit have his way all the time. Aiden glanced over with a worried look on his face, but Blake only gave him a nod. They both knew if they were caught now, they would be executited. Something neither of them wanted.
The clanking of armour grew louder as the solder approached, but to Aiden and Blake's relief the soldier seemed complacent, which meant the alarm had yet to be raised about the rebels. There was still a chance to save what had started as a complete mess. When the clanking grew faded away as the soldier walked past the hedge, Aiden signaled for Blake to get ready. They would have to make a mad dash to the wall and climb over it if they wanted to get out now. The front gate would have too many soldiers and he did not want to risk the alarm sounding while they were trying to talk their way out. Blake did his best to crouch down and transfer Trooper to his shoulder. He waited.
Aiden gave the signal and dashed out of the hedge. Blake not far behind him. The wall they had to climb came closer, revealing itself not to be no higher than a few inches taller than Aiden. The garden his mother planted was meant to bring a beauty to the castle for the people to see, and in the spring and summer, the flowers bloomed aver the walls doing just that. When she died, the flowers were still taken care of, but they were never allowed to grow beyond the wall. Looking back, aiden saw Blake right behind him before he ran into something hard and ice cold.
"Prince?" Came a gruffed voice above Aiden.
"Yes?" Aiden asked rubbing his arm where he had run into the guard.
