“Miss, could you refill our cups,” one of the three men at the table asked as Melody snapped to attention, bringing over the jug she carried.
“Right, sorry,” she quickly poured the ale, moving along the table.
“Kurt, be nice to her will you,” the one man said sitting next to Kurt.
“Like you have room to talk Felix,” Kurt sneered looking at the woman sitting next to Felix. “Are you sure you came with the right guy Raine?”
“Kurt stop it before you get hurt tonight,” the one called Raine said putting her hand on Felix’s arm.
“She’s right you know,” the other woman at the table said as the man beside her sighed.
“Stay out of this Paige,” Felix said not wanting the women to get involved.
“You are scaring not only this poor girl, but some of the other servants as well,” Paige’s husband said glaring at the two.
“Sorry Dalton,” Felix muttered as Dalton continued to glare at Kurt.
“Yeah, sorry lady,” Kurt said looking the other way.
“Do not mind me, it is my first time doing something like this. I am bound to make mistakes,” Melody said giving a short bow before returning to Cordelia’s side.
The night passed quickly for Melody after the encounter with Aiden, who had escaped her mind as she watched the table she was assigned. They were nice enough to realize she was a beginner, but did not demand outrageous actions from her. They seemed to take delight in how she became easily embarrassed as they talked to her for a few moment, but for nobles they seemed to be out of place.
Melody noticed the others seemed to keep their distance from the table as if it were a plague. When she asked Cordelia why, she was simply answered with a shrug.
The sound of the small orchestra came to Melody’s ears. How could she have skipped over them when she first came in, especially when they were placed near the very doors she had entered. The sound was light and lifted the spirits of all in the room except perhaps the king, but he seemed to be preoccupied.
A few of the noblemen asked their wives if they wished to dance, and a few of the younger ones asked the women they were courting. Melody was surprised when the married couple, Paige and Dalton, at the table did not get up to dance, but seemed to have found delight in humming along with the music. Felix, another man sitting at the table, had asked Raine, but she shook her head knowing full well Felix was only asking to be polite and didn't really want to dance at all.
Towards the end of the banquet Melody was having trouble keeping on her feet and even staying awake. It was late and a full day's work did not help the situation. Cordelia had to nudge her twice before the king finally stood up and bowed to his guests, telling them he had to retire. But before he left he whispered something in the ear of the mistress.
Melody did not miss the reaction on her face as the king left the hall.
Sighing, she filled the cup of one of the guests named Kurt. Melody was not too sure if he should continue drinking since only a short time before he complained about being hot and wanted to shed some of his clothing.
Felix tried to stop him, yet in the attempt, Kurt ended up punching him in the face. The worst part, he had been aiming for Felix’s abdomen. Before Kurt could even take a sip of the drink, Raine decided to take it from his hands.
It was overall a grand scene, but Melody wanted nothing more than to go to her room to get some sleep before she had to get up to perform her duties of the day. The group at her table had worn her out with all their little spats between Kurt and Felix, but it seemed they knew each other well enough to know when to stop.
