Chapter 9

“It hurts because it matters.”

                                 ~John Green

Sam's POV

I was in the small local coffee shop when she texted me.

Jules: Don't ignore him because of me.

I rolled my eyes. Was she really that clueless? Miles had nothing to do with it, and where did she got that idea, anyway?

It had been two days already and she still didn't know the reason why I was angry at her. The answer was just right in front of her, hunting her or something.

I just ignored my phone like what I did to Julie (and for her observation; like what I did to Miles) and I continued to stir my coffee.

“Sam, we need to talk.” Julie had said when I entered the living room. She was standing beside the telephone, her eyes were puffy. Miles looked at me in surprise, he was half standing; half sitting like he just frozed to death.

The television was left on, unnoticed. The credits of Family Guy playing.

“Why?” I asked while I crossed my arms. “I-I should probably go.” Miles stuttered and he ran through the second floor. Julie's eyes followed Miles movements. Miles nodded and she nodded back before he left the view.

She sat on a couch and I sat accross from her. She took the the remote from the coffee table and changed the channel. When she reached a movie channel she paused and smiled. It was Mean Girls.

I sighed in defeat. I admit that it is one of the greatest movies I have ever watched but it just gets annoying. “Today was Harper's funeral...” she said and I looked down, why did she have to remind me? “Marcus just called, he asked me why we didn't show up.”

My head shot up, ”Why would he care about Harper anyway. His Harper's ex.” I asked. Jules sighed, “He still loves her, Sam. You know that.”, and I looked down again defeated. Jules was right, Harper was the one who broke the relationship.

“But that's not the thing I want to talk about.” she reasoned out, “I regret everything I said to you that day in our fight, Sam. I realize in that call how awful a best friend I was. I'm awfully, terribly, really sorry.”

She finally apologized but I didn't had the urged to forgive her for some reason.

“And I'm not just gonna apologize with you only...” she trailed off. She looked up the ceiling and she continued, “Harper, wherever you are, I'm awfully, terribly, really sorry.” She looked so serious; she was about to cry.

“I was thinking about myself the whole time. I'm really sorry about that.” she said while she wiped her face. “I'm so sorry.” she stuttered out and she covered her face. She was crying.

I walked up to her, and patted her back. “Shh, it's ok...I forgive you, and Harper does too.” I whispered in her ear.

After comforting Jules, who was already her old happy, joyful self, we watched the rest of Mean Girls.

“You know what, you still didn't answered me why you're avoiding Miles.” she randomly asked and I shrugged “I don't know why, but I'm pretty sure it's not about you.”

“You should give him a chance then. The lad didn't do anything wrong.” she interjected, but I shook my head. She looked at me weirdly, “I don't know how to explain this but he just act so odd, like his hiding something important.” I tried to explain.

“Don't judge too quickly, Sam. His not what you think he is.” she warned, “Do you even know him that much?” I interjected. “Actually, I do.” she answered angrily.

I bolted my hands into a fist “How can you-!!” I was gonna exclaim but she cut me off. “Sam please, I don't wanna fight with you again.” she pleaded, and I calmed down my hand.

“Can you just hear me out, and give Miles a chance” she pleaded again, “His a sweet lad, and he knows how to cook.” she joked and I smiled.

I nodded “Okay, but if he messes this up I'll never speak to him the rest of my life.”
