Although David had done it a couple of times before, the thought of going into the woods at night to look for a werewolf puppy still made him extremely uneasy. Going up to Max himself was easy since he was a friendly pup but it was all the predators out to get him and his camper that made concerned him the most. It didn't help that wolf Max was just as feisty as human Max. The poor thing always got himself into some sort of trouble. He was the brave Scappy to his cowardly Scooby.
His steps were quiet as he glanced around the forest full of pine and birch. The only sound was the pitter patters of small forest creatures scuttling along with their little journeys. David held the can of dog food even tighter in his hand as the forest got darker. Who knew what could smell it?
David's head whipped around when there was the sound of happy panting getting closer to him. A moment later he was looking down at a small, black wolf with fluffy fur. Inside its mouth was a squirrel, still and silent. The metallic smell of blood made its way to David's nose, making the man want to cringe. Max's wide, green eyes seemed to be glowing with pride as his tail wagged excitedly.
"O-oh," said David uncomfortably. "You seem proud of yourself."
Although David had a fascination with nature and was fully aware of the food chain, the thought of his camper bringing him a dead squirrel sent shivers down his spine. He knew Max didn't and wouldn't remember anything about being in his wolf form, judging by his behaviour the previous times when he de-transformed into a human the previous times. Sometimes the man even wondered whether Max even knew about his behaviour as a wolf.
The pup dropped the squirrel at David's feet, blood staining the lower half of Max's innocent-looking face. His tail continued to wag in anticipation as David leaned down to pat him. Max jumped up onto David's legs, his front paws touching the man's knees. David affectionately stroked the wolf's head, chuckling as the wolf rubbed his head on David's thigh.
It wasn't rare for David's heart to have a warm feeling but he never thought it would be within a meter of a dead squirrel. He hated picking favorites among the campers but he couldn't help but be overcome with affection every time Max did something that indicated he at least liked him. All the campers were like his and Gwen's children to some degree but Max was actually the spitting image of David when he was younger. He knew that Max would someday be taken back home and away from Camp Campbell but at least he could make the most of the summer and make sure everyone learned new things.
"Good boy," he cooed.
The wolf pup then went back to finishing off his little treat. His tail wagged happily as its teeth sunk into the dead animal's corpse. Every squish of the muscle seemed to make the pup even more pleased with himself. He sat next to David as he munched away.
The night continued like the past nights with a full moon. David watched Max hunt small animals under the full moon and played games with him like fetch with a squeaky toy. Over the time he spent with the werewolf he noticed he really loved any kind of physical affection, whether it be pats, belly rubs or scratches under the chin. Every time he tried to even touch human Max's hair he would get scratched by his nails.
Towards the end of the night, David emptied the can of dog food onto the ground. Usually he would feed him the meal at the end of the night since the wolf would be tired out. A tired and full wolf was easier take back to camp than a wolf who just still wanted to play. Max scoffed the whole thing down within seconds, not even looking up at David.
A few minutes later, David was carrying a sleepy wolf back to camp as it panted softly on his arm. When he reached Max's tent, the wolf had drifted off. David tucked him in and left to go to his cabin, exhaustion starting to take its toll on his body as well.
