The airport was extremely busy, with people walking in all directions at once. Jayne and I had pulled our hair back into a ponytail to make it a bit less noticeable. As we headed in the direction of the kiosks, we passed by a TV set to the news station, which many were crowded around.
"It has been confirmed by this station that the child has blue eyes. Whether or not they need glasses or not is indeed unconfirmed, with conflicting reports flooding in. Please leave your tips at..."
Jayne and I looked at each other uncomfortably. While both of us had blue eyes, we also did need glasses. Jayne was extremely less blind then me, and both of us preferred to wear contact lenses or just go blind at night.
Worst comes to worst, I could probably convince anyone evil coming after Jayne that I'm the child, just long enough for her to get away, I thought to myself. We checked the board above the kiosks, seeing that there was a flight to Christchurch in just under an hour. We ran to the front desk. The lady smiled at us professionally.
"Hello, we would like to buy four tickets for the next flight to Christchurch." Angel took lead of the conversation.
"Of course, let me just check that for you. Ok, I see that we have a flight with two seats in two side aisles that I could sit you together in. You would be separated as a whole group unfortunately." She smiled apologetically at us. I looked at Angel, nodding.
"That will have to do then."
"Alright, if I could have your passports please?" We handed over the passports quickly. She flipped through each one lazily."What's that station over there?" Cupid piped up. I turned to see him pointing at a kiosk with "Dream Projection" blared across it, manned by two highly bulked up guards.
"That's where passengers can leave their dreams about the child to have them verified and so more information can be collated. There is talk that the government is going to make it non-optional, so I would suggest doing it before you leave for your trip." Cupid and I's eyes met. The government had already implemented Dream Projection technology – who knows what else they had up their sleeve?"We will keep it in mind." Angel smiled at the lady as she typed loudly on the keyboard.
"Alright then, that will come to a total of $1940 for the four of you. You will be flying with Qantas today, boarding starts in thirty minutes, just go straight through security. Your gate is number eight. How will you be paying today?" I stepped forward, card in hand. She nodded, handing me a card readers. I began paying.
"Let's get your bags checked in now, so you can get to your flight as quickly as possible. Please take anything you'd like on the flight out now."We quickly got our bags checked in, grabbing wallets passports and phones. She bid us a good trip, and we almost fell over ourselves trying to get to security. We arrived in under a couple of minutes, lining up in the thankfully short queues for the scanners. Off came my jumper and my belt, and everything into the bin. I stepped through the scanner without issue.
I noticed that the border security was watching us carefully, talking on their radios. I as I looked around, I noticed we were the only girls with blonde hair around. I kept a straight face as I went to put my belt back on.
A border security agent approached from behind me.
"Excuse me ma'am?" she asked, one hand on her radio. I turned to her, plastering a smile on my face.
"Yes?"
"Could you pleases come with us to customs?"
"I was just about to head there anyway, just waiting for my friends."
"I understand ma'am, just protocol."
"So can I wait for my friends?"Before she could answer, Jayne came through the scanner, eyeing the interaction. She stuffed her stuff back in her pockets, before approaching.
"Is there a problem?"
"No ma'am, I just need to escort you and your friend to customs."
"Whatever for? I've never been escorted to customs before."
"Just protocol ma'am... I'm not sure if you know, but most people of your likeness are sticking around in the country."
"Well we weren't going to give up a trip just for some stupid dream." I smiled at the agent as Angel made her through.
"Even still ma'am, I would feel much better if I made sure you went through customs properly."
"Of course, we will just wait for our last friend, and then head off. We are in a bit of a rush anyway, our plane leaves in forty minutes."
