It was midday when Mr Aizawa took his students to the P.E. Grounds and had students paired to spar in front of the rest if the class.
Currently, sparring was Ojiro and Tokoyami. Everyone watched as Tokoyami's quirk, Dark Shadow, blocked hits from Ojiro's tail. Their objective was much like the Sports Festival; the match ends when your opponent steps out of bonds or is immobilized.
Mr Aizawa reminded Class 1-A that they didn't need to recreate the same intensity as they did on the day of the Sports Festival - he explained while staring at Todoroki.
"I felt like I was being called out." Todoroki said, his same monotoned voice, but with a bit of a pout.
"Well it's totally not because you nearly frozen the entire stadium and audience with a titanic crushing glacier." Hailey remarked in her usually joking matter.
"She has a point." Midoriya added quietly, as some other students chuckled and snickered at Hailey's response.
"Who do you think you're gonna brawl, Hails?" Kirishima questioned, his voice sounding pumped for his match to come.
Hailey smirked at him, "I dunno, if it's you, it'll be quick."
"Oh yeah?" Kirishima challenged, he grinned and bared his sharp teeth.
"Yeah, because lord knows that getting hit by rocks hurt, so you will be pushed out of bounds immediately." Hailey retorted, and began to let out an awkward laugh at her dread.
The two laughed and continued to talk about the other possible ways a sparring session would go between them.
"Alright, Tokoyami is the winner." Mr Aizawa announced in his signature bored and tired voice. Behind him, Tokoyami bowed respectful at Ojiro, who was standing to his feet out of bounds, and returned the gesture. "Alright, next is Roselle and.." Aizawa paused and scribbled something on the clipboarded paper. "Bakugou."
Everyone else in the class jolted in surprise.
"Someone is going to die."
"She'll get annihilated!"
"No, obliterated!"
"That's the same thing!"
Hailey grinned, "Yay! Hey Baku, we haven't sparred yet! I'm excited!" She declared and walked into the large chalk drawn rectangle.
"She greats death with a smile!"
Jirou used her ear jacks on Kaminari and Mineta, "Would you two shut up?"
"Don't underestimate Hailey, she placed in the top 5 at the sports festival, which is a lot more than you two can say." Mina defended her friend.
"It'll be an interesting match." Midoriya said outloud, "Their quirks are a lot alike if you think about it."
"But Hailey's can't cause as much damage." Todoroki added, while everyone observed the two.
Hailey reached to shake Bakugou's hand in a friendly gesture, but he just smacked it away.
"I will take a high five!" She told him and the two backed up from each other.
"No, but it isn't bound to just her using it, it can be used on other people. That's how she was able to get her opponents out of bounds so quickly. Those wavelength boosts are used to just increase her speed and strength." Midoriya pondered aloud.
"Yes, and from our experience with Roselle, there is probably more to her quirk than what she shows, also considering what she may have learnt during her internship and training." Iida mentioned.
"Same goes for Bakugou," Kirishima made sure to input (Yeah stand up for your boyfriend), "he's probably learnt a lot from the Best Jeanist."
"Who knows how this match will go." Uraraka sighed.
"Okay you two," Mr Aizawa began to explain, "during this fight, I want you to focus more on hand to hand combat, with limited use of your quirks. Again, we don't want a repeat of the Sports Festival."
"Gotcha Mr Aizawa!" Hailey enthusiastically saluted at her teacher, showing him that she understood her instructions.
"Alright, begin!"
———
Everyone waited for someone to make the first move, they questioned why Bakugou hadn't charged at Hailey yet.
"Since you can use your boost quirk, you won't be able to push me out of bounds like at the festival." Bakugou pointed out to her, almost boasting at the fact that her matches went by quickly based on her quirk.
"Same could be said for you, running around and using your explosive hands to propel yourself and cause any damage." Hailey retorted back, "Also, literally find a better time to be smug. We can trash talk after we finish our lesson on procrastinating."
Bakugou growled and then charged at Hailey, who swiftly dodged him and kicked him in the back. Bakugou maybe have been pushed and stumbled a bit, but he looked over his shoulder at his opponent in boiling anger.
He then tried to send a punch at Hailey, but she ducked, using her hands to support her backwards landing. Then she pushed up to kick Bakugou in the stomach and gave him a light boost, which landed him on his back and on the ground. He wasn't out of bounds yet.
"Did you just use your quirk on me?!" He shouted at Hailey.
"She's aloud to use it lightly, since she's relying on her hand to hand combat more." Aizawa answered.
"C'mon Baku, if you would have watched me at all during the festival, you'd know that I rely more on my physical abilities rather than my quirk." Hailey told him.
This made Bakugou consider his options, how he would beat Hailey.
The two then sprung back into close hand to hand combat. Although Bakugou was fast and landed a few hits on Hailey, she was good at dodging and redirecting hits.
"How come you weren't like this during the festival?" Bakugou questioned her, as he tried to push Hailey by their arms.
Hailey dug her feet into the ground to counteract Bakugou's push. "I have some anxiety, you know. Messes with my quirk, only because I let it." Hailey told him, pushing back at him. "I'm not scared to spar you, what I'm scared of isn't something I'd openly announce."
Hailey then boosted her feet and gained the upper hand, by grabbing onto Bakugou's arms tightly and flipping over him and throwing him over her shoulder. Everyone heard the crack emitted into the air. Bakugou was on the ground when Mr Aizawa said that the time was up and that Hailey won.
Hailey then reached out her right hand to help Bakugou off the ground, but he glared at her and stood up on his own.
"Your shoulder alright, Roselle?" Mr Aizawa questioned, not looking up from his clipboard.
"Yeah," Hailey answered, making a rolling motion with her shoulder to hear more cracks, "Just needs to be cracked." She then twisted her back to hear more cracks.
"Okay that's enough. Kaminari and Iida go up."
———
In different circumstances, Bakugou would have won that match, but he did win the next one. Hailey was thrown into her back by him, much paralleled to their first sparring match.Hailey made sure to tell him that there would be no bad blood between them and she learned a lot from sparring with him. Bakugou envied Hailey's reaction time and acrobatic skills, especially when it came to dodging. She may end up in uncomfortable positions where others would lose balance and that would cost them their battle, but she can catch herself and use that to gain the upper hand.
Bakugou is tempted to ask Hailey for a training session of acrobatics, but decided against it, due to his pride and his doubts that he would be able to learn from someone who was always helping everyone with something.
Their quirks were so much alike and their both shared a close combat type of fighting.
When there is something driving you, when the rules change, so do the results.
