The drive down to Casey’s café was quiet. I tapped the steering wheel with my fingernails shooting a glance here and there at May who sat staring blankly out the window. I wanted to ask her so babdly about this Joey guy, but I thought the conversation would do better over a donut and a cup of coffee.

Finally pulling up into the parking lot of Casey’s Café we got out of the car and went inside.

“So how was your first class?” I asked, breaking the silence. “It was good.” She replied. “How was yours?” She asked. “It was good too…” I thought about telling her about Ryan that I had met in class today, but why should I tell her about Ryan if she’s going to keep this Joey guy a secret to all of us.

I stopped stalling on asking May about Joey and just blurted it out. “May who’s that Joey guy who left the message on our phone?” She waited a while before answering. “He’s a friend I met through the summer when me and Jenn went to go watch the football players practice for fall season.” “So Jenn knows him too?” I asked. “Well not really, she didn’t really talk to him.” She replied. I smiled at her trying to joke. “So are you guys, like together?” I said smiling wider. She looked up at me trying to hold back her blushing but failed. “You like him!” I said stretching my words.

“Okay, yeah I do like him.” “And you guys are dating?” She paused for a while again. “Yes were dating…” She looked up at me from staring down at her cup of coffee and donut and began to laugh when she saw my happy face. I laughed and took a couple bites of my donut. “So what about the message he left?” “What message, you listened to the message?”

“Yeah when I came home before I took a shower.” I replied taking another bite of my donut trying to make her feel like it was no big deal, but to her it was. “Why are you listening to my messages?” She said sternly. I looked at her giving her a “whats the big deal look”. “May it’s our apartment phone we all share that phone, so when messages come up any of us can check them.

“Well I’d like a little more privacy.” She said glaring at me. What was her problem, why is she making this such a big deal. A guy named Joey called our home phone and she gets mad at me because I checked the messages like all of us always do, why is she getting to upset and what is she trying to hide. “Are you seriously getting upset about this?” She squinted her eyes. “I have every reason to be upset. I don’t go looking through your messages with Justin, and I don’t get all nosy about other peoples relationships.” “Yeah because we always tell eachother everything, when have we ever hid anything from eachother.” “But why do you even care.” She replied.

“Look May, since you obviously don’t want me to know anything about this Joey guy, then I won’t ask anymore, and if you want your privacy so bad, then how about you tell your friend Joey to call your cellphone instead of our house phone.” I said to her like it was the most obvious thing in the world, which it was.

May rolled her eyes gathered her things and left leaving me at the table by myself. I did nothing to upset her, but for some reason she got all offended, this isn’t like her. I looked out the window of the café to see her walking back toward campus. I then finished my food and left.

I blasted The music in the car on my drive back to college, thinking about the previous situation agrrivated me but I just ignored it. It was no use getting mad over when I had done nothing wrong. But it was just weird how May’s mood had changed so quickly, one second we’re laughing and talking about her new boyfriend and then as soon as I bring up the message she freaks out on me and walks out? I pass her on the way back to the apartment, but I don’t stop for her, it’s not like she would get in the car anyways.

The food is sitting on the kitchen table in front of me, filling the kitchen with the sent of chinese food. I look at the stacks of books and papers sitting on the chair next to me, to much work to do tonight. I hear Jenn finishing off the dirty dishes in the kitchen, then she comes into the room with two plates and two forks for us to start eating.

She notices my different mood. “Are you okay Anna, you look upset about something?” Does it really show? “No, it’s just a argument me and May got into earlier today.” Jenn laughed. “When aren’t you guys arguing?” I laughed myself me and May argue a lot but we usually get over in the next second, this time I’m not so sure. I sat there quietly staring at the food. “Woah, okay was it that bad what happened, what did you guys argue about?” “Well we went down to Casey’s Café to grab a bite to eat and everything went fine until I brought up this message I heard on the phone from her new boyfriend.” Jenn stopped what she was doing and looked at me. “ She has a boyfriend, for how long, why hasn’t she ever told us about him?” “I don’t know, and I wonder the same thing.” “But why did she get mad at you?” “I don’t know that either, it was like when I brought it up she completely changed her mood, got upset, and the walked out.”

“Wait, she walked out on you?” Jenn asked. “Yeah she did, and I don’t know if this is just another arguement or if she really mad about this.” I said “Just give her time hopefully she’ll come around.” “Yeah I guess.” I replied. “So what’s his name?” She asked. “It’s Joey.” Jenn stopped again and looked at me with a surprised look. “Football Joey?” “So you know about him.” I said. “Yeah, remember our first year in college, he dated Susan.” I stared at her blankly. “You don’t remember Anna he treated Susan like shit, and in the end he ended up cheating on her, remember?” Now I remember, Justin was also a close friend of Susan’s and when he found out how Joey was treating her, he beat him up, telling him not to bother Susan again. Me and Susan were really close that year I wonder what happened. “Anna, are you still there?” I shook myself from my thoughts. “Yeah, just thinking, wait but May told me you were there with her… at the football practices, you didn’t say anything when you saw her with him?” “No because all the did was talki, like how I’m talking to you now, they never flirted or kissed or anything, so I didn’t think anything of it…until now.”

“Did May know about him and Susan?” I asked “I’m not sure, but she should have, I mean we always talked about when we knew what he was doing to her, so I would have thought she would overhear us.” “Yeah but we can’t assume that.” Jenn and I both sat in silence thinking about the situation. “Well I guess we’ll talk to her about it tomorrow?” I said. “Yeah hopefully if she doesn’t freak out again.”

Jenn and I bagan to eat our food, when she asked “So how was your first class?” As soon as she asked Ryan came to mind but I don’t know why. “It was good…I met this guy.” “What guy?” She asked. “His names ryan, I met him this morning when I had dropped my book he helped me pick them up and theWhy are you smiling and no…but he did keep smiling at me.” “Anna, you know there Justin, I mean you guys hav been together for two years and now your on your third, don’t let anyone get between that.” She had a point. “I’m not I don’t like him, I just thought it was weird how he flited with me, I mean no one has ever since I have been dating Justin.” “Well now Justin’s not here, he transefered ways away, so now they think they can have a chance with you.” Jenn andd I just looked at eachother and laughed, then we continued eating our food.
