Each night, Tatyana lay awake, thinking about Kyoko. About her voice that always seemed so snarky. About her smile which brightened up any room. About her laugh which always managed to make Tatyana grin. No matter where she was, Tatyana had Kyoko on her mind. It was an endless game. They had several classes together since the fight and each time she noticed Kyoko staring at her. When Tatyana stared back, Kyoko would just wink and look away. They had even began to hang out with each other and spoke all the time. It had started to get stressful. Tatyana had almost failed one of her tests because of lack of sleep, only just managing to beat the girl she was fighting. Something about this girl gave her a feeling she never felt before. Some of the girls who came late talked about this thing called a crush. It was a person you loved. The closet Tatyana had come to love was the affections he felt for Natalya, who is like a mother figure for her. But a crush was someone you liked romantically. Tatyana couldn't like someone like that. It wasn't allowed in Khela Headquarters. They said that romantic relationships would distract from their training and future missions.
So Tatyana couldn't like her like that. Sure she was attracted to girls but she had never experienced romantic attraction to anyone. None of the other students or the leaders.
She had become friends with Kyoko, nothing more.
Even if she did feel strangely nervous around her. Or if she felt the strange urge to kiss her sometimes. Or if she found her beautiful. Or if Tatyana found herself glancing at Kyoko when she thought no one was looking. And sure Tatyana sometimes felt like holding Kyoko and never letting go. But that was just wanting to protect her friend. And maybe Tatyana felt a surge of happiness when Kyoko complimented her on her skill set. And the green eyed girl felt metaphorical butterflies in her stomach when Ky, as Tatyana had taken to calling her, found an excuse to touch her. Like last week when the Japanese girl touched her hair when taking a leaf from it. Or that time when Kyoko put a necklace on for Tatyana and grabbed her shoulders after. Then there was the time the dark haired girl grabbed Tatyana's arm when the girls would have a movie night and the film was a horror that scared her. And there was the time when they slept in the same bed to keep warm because the electricity had went out throughout the building. But they did all those things in a friendly way. Right?
This was Tatyana's first friend and she just felt happy around her. And like any good friend, Tatyana wanted to protect her friend. So that sometimes meant that she would let out a breath she didn't know she was holding when Kyoko would beat someone in a fight without getting hurt. And would avoid hitting Kyoko. That also meant she tried to keep the taller girl out of trouble so she wouldn't be punished by one of the leaders. She did all that to protect her best friend, not because she had a crush on her. It's just being protective of her best friend.
Not like she wanted to attack every person that would show interest in Kyoko. Not like she had to stop herself from growling when the taller girl would smile at someone else. No. And even if she did do those things, she didn't want anyone to break the heart of her companion. Not because she had romantic feelings towards her.
Tatyana was sure anyone that met Kyoko probably felt like this around her too. Kyoko just radiated good energy and happiness. She was charismatic and cool. Kyoko told her all about where she grew up, as she was one of the girls who came later. Her parents had been killed on a holiday to Russia and she had been found by Claudia. Japan; according to what Kyoko said, was a beautiful country and people there were very polite. And it has sewer water so clean that fish can live in it, a city that was gorgeous even at night time and stunning rural areas. Tatyana couldn't help but think how amazing it would have been to grow up there.
In turn, the brown eyed girl listened to Tatyana and her story of her childhood. The smaller black haired teenager told her about how Natalya told her where she came from. About how her parents were shot dead when she was a few weeks old. About how Natalya was like a mother to her, nurturing her and basically raising her with the help of Ezra. Those two were like parents to her. About how she had been training since she could walk. And Kyoko really listened! She had asked her questions about training and what she knew about the world outside of Headquarters. Then the taller girl told her about the different books, movies and TV shows that they didn't watch at Khela. Would tell her about everything she knew about the world. And she would make Tatyana laugh so hard she'd fall over or start to tear up.
But that was just because she was funny. And it's not like the fact that she is funny makes Tatyana be interested in her romantically. Not at all.
Except Tatyana wished that her friend would sleep in her bed every night, not just when the power went off. And the short girl wished that Kyoko would run her fingers through her hair and hug her from behind. And Tatyana found herself wanting Kyoko to kiss her gently and run her hands across her body. Wanted Kyoko to hold her tightly and press soft kisses to her neck as she fell asleep. Wanted Kyoko to hold her hand and smile at her with that smile she saved for Tatyana and Tatyana only. And she wanted the taller girl to love her. And-
Oh shit, thought Tatyana. I'm in love with Kyoko.
