The buzzing of my alarm coming from my phone caused me to jump. Bastian's arm tightened around me, pulling me closer before twitching to release me. The alarm was shut off by neither me nor Bastian, causing my eyes to fly open. I lifted my gaze to take in Dimitri, his face darkening in what appeared to be heartbreak. I frowned trying to understand what had hurt him but could come up with no answer.
"What is this?" He rose his finger to motion between us as anxiety slid through me. His voice was calm but there was a darkness to it that warned of danger and had me instinctively sliding closer to Bastian, who wrapped his arm around me again, pulling me more firmly against him.
"She had a nightmare," Bastian said, his voice rumbling through his chest, calming me. "She asked me to stay."
I raised my head, but Bastian's arm tightened around me in a way that was as protective as it was possessive. Dimitri narrowed his eyes at him. His face darkened in that same expression of confusing heartache.
"Is that true?" Dimitri asked his hazel eyes moving from me to Bastian.
I didn't know why but I felt as if I should answer him. It really wasn't his business what I did but something told me it was important. "Yes," I said as I noticed movement behind him and found Jonathon standing in the doorway before turning back to Dimitri. "I was scared and he-"
Dimitri's brow furrowed stopping me but when he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. "He made you feel safe."
I swallowed, then nodded because the look on his face was pure sadness, making me wonder if the heartbreak was over me.
"I'm glad." He forced a smile, then turned to walk past Jonathon out the door with his shoulders bowed forward. Somehow, I doubt he had told me the truth. Jonathon gave me an anxious smile, then turned to follow him.
I raised my head to stare into Bastian's blue eyes with a frown on my face. "What was that about?"
He reached forward and moved a strand of hair off my forehead with the tip of his finger. "Loneliness," he said with a sad smile. "That's all. It's not any fault of yours nor mine. The fault lies with Dimitri."
"But he seemed upset with me," I whispered, frowning as I glanced toward the door before turning back to Bastian.
"No," Bastian said on a sigh. "It's not you. I promise. He's prone to be melancholy. He's older than me and Jonathon so his existence becomes tiresome at times especially since Jonathon and I are the only company he has."
"That's sad," I said, my heart aching for him as I took in Bastian's face. "Do you feel melancholy too?"
His lips twitched, "Not anymore," he said, glancing at the clock before nudging me. "Come on...We've got to get to school."
