A loud crash sounded through the house, causing Izzie and I to jump. Dimitri's howl of anguish echoed around us as Bastian and Jonathon glanced toward the door, their troubled expressions reflecting the storm brewing in another part of the house.
"We can't let him remain unfettered while he's in such a state," Bastian said, his voice low with anguish. "He's dangerous as he is."
Jonathon's head bowed as he took a deep breath trying to calm himself. His shoulders shook with grief. He glanced at me before his eyes settled on Izzie. At the moment, she was the one who was most at risk. I would probably be a close second.
"What will you do to him?" I asked as Bastian's eyes darkened. I could tell whatever would happen would be painful to do to his brother.
"We'll have to chain him." He gritted his teeth as if just the words hurt him.
"That's torture for a vampire," Izzie said, proving again that she knew more than I did about vampires and being a witch when she hadn't even had the dreams. "He'll be vulnerable. If the Walnut Creek Church members find him, they'll be able to hurt him."
"Izzie," Jonathon whispered, his eyes holding so much torment that I could feel it in my soul, "He is capable of harming others right now. He could harm you or Lanie. We can't allow that to happen."
"I don't understand." She frowned. "Why?"
Jonathon shifted and bit his bottom lip. "You have to find the answer to that on your own," he said. I realized how hard it was for Bastian to keep the secret from me because Jonathon was clearly fighting against the rule that bound him.
"From the dreams, right?" She asked, her brows furrowing before landing on me. "Lanie, if you tell me this is the right thing to do, I'll believe you."
I bit my bottom lip as I remembered his aggressiveness from just an hour before. I crossed my arms over my abdomen, trying to calm my spinning stomach as Bastian stepped closer to me. Though I knew it had to be done, it wasn't something I felt good about.
I raised my eyes to Izzie's. "It is the right thing," I said, my voice cracking, making the words sound brittle and weak.
She nodded, her eyes troubled as Jonathon moved toward the door. Bastian turned to me, pulling me into his arms.
"Don't open this door unless it's Jonathon or me," he said, his voice shaking. His grip on me was tight.
"What if he breaks it down?" I asked with wide eyes.
"I promise...I will do everything to keep him from getting that close," Bastian vowed, taking my cheeks into his hands. "Trust me, Lanie. Please trust me. I won't let anything or anyone hurt you."
