When we reached the manor, Dimitri met us at the door his expression panicked. His eyes moved over Izzie with worry darkening his brow as they flickered toward how Jonathon was holding her like she was a precious treasure against his chest. His jaw clenched but he shook his head as his handsome face smoothed into a mask of indifference.
"I haven't had a chance to prepare a room for Izzie," he said, shifting, his cheeks red in a way that I knew wasn't embarrassment. His concern was mixing with frustration and anger so potent it wrapped around us in the most suffocating way, making it hard to breathe in the already stifling atmosphere of the room.
"She can sleep in my room," I whispered, hoping to break the tension as Dimitri gave a curt nod.
Jonathon climbed the stairs without a word turning down the hallway to my room with Bastian, Dimitri, and me on his heels. I reached for Bastian's hand, needing the comfort. He wrapped his fingers around mine as Dimitri growled behind us.
Bastian glanced at him, his eyes flashing with annoyance. "Not now, Dimitri," he said, through clenched teeth. "There is so much going on that Lanie and Izzie don't need your issues right now. You need to calm down and think of them."
Dimitri's gaze turned to me and I flinched away from the emotions swirling within his gaze, pressing closer to Bastian. He blinked and his mask slid back into place as he moved past us to peer at Jonathon laying Izzie gently on the bed. The muscle beneath Dimitri's eye jumped as Jonathon brushed the hair from her face before sweeping his fingertips gently over her cheek.
Dimitri's jaw clenched before he straightened and stomped from the room. My eyes followed him wondering if he was angry at us or because Izzie had been hurt.
"What's wrong with him?" I asked, my heart clenching with worry. My blue eyes moved to Bastian, darkening with confusion.
He shook his head, his expression shadowed with remorse. "Remember those things I can't tell you...That you have to figure out yourself?"
I nodded, my stomach churning because I knew I wasn't going to get an answer. I would have to figure it out on my own. "Yes," I whispered, hoping for a clue that would help me puzzle out the mysteries in my life.
"Dimitri's demeanor has to do with that," he said, wincing with the desire to tell me but knowing he couldn't, then released a sigh that was filled with so much pain that it made my heart ache, "Sadly, Izzie will also have to figure those things out too but right now, I think it's best if you both focus on your safety. All of that will come when it's time."
I glanced at Izzie taking in her pale face. Pain traveled through me, invading my whole body, causing a tremble to slide down my spine. When she woke, pain from her parent's deaths would swamp her. My lip trembled as my own pain slashed through me. As her best friend, they had been like a second family to me. The fact that they were gone felt surreal.
