Jonathon and Bastian brought me back to the manor to give me time to unpack. When I closed the door to my room, I heard the faint ringing of my phone, realizing I had left it in my purse hidden in the bottom of my duffle bag. I dragged it out, finding I had missed thirteen calls from Izzie. Pressing the answer button, I shook my head and sighed heavily because Izzie could be a bit neurotic when she was worried.
"You finally fucking answered!" Izzie shouted in my ear, her voice edged in panic. "You scared the shit out of me!"
"I'm sorry, Iz," I said, rolling my eyes, glad that she didn't see it because tough or not, it would hurt her feelings. "Calm down. I'm alive."
"You're living in a house that would put the Addam's family to shame and you're telling me to calm down?" I laughed, glancing at the opulent room.
"It's actually very pretty," I smirked as she remained silent. "And the Gage brothers are nice. It's not as bad as I thought it would be."
"Do you not remember the way creepy Bastian stares at you?" She sighed, exasperated. "If he has a shrine to you, it is not romantic."
"There is actually a reason for that." I began to pull my belongings from my bag and placing them on my bed while staring at my meager possessions, realizing how little space I would use in that huge walk-in closet. "As a matter of fact, there are a lot of things we didn't know."
"Like what?" The skepticism was clear in her voice. "Because for the last few hours I was imagining them making a dress from your skin."
"Like they were friends with my parents." I shifted because it was strange that I didn't know. It made me wonder what else I didn't know about my parents. A long pause followed.
"Is that why they hired you?" She asked, confusion tinged with surprise coating her words.
"Well, they didn't actually hire me." I winced, pulling more clothes from my bag. "They didn't think I would come here to talk to them, and they were right. They want me to live here and they want to take care of me. They feel they owe it to my mom and dad."
"Lanie, I know you," she said hesitantly, her voice taking on all her worry. "You would hate that."
"And I do but he told me to do the job if that made me feel better." I sighed as I shook my head. Izzie knew me too well.
"And Bastian staring?" She asked but I could tell from her voice her opinions of the Gage brothers were changing.
"He didn't know how to offer his condolences," I said with a shrug. "Honestly, they have been nice. The only people who bothered me today were a couple of people at the restaurant where we ate."
