Roman and Virgil walked hand and hand.
"You gonna tell me where you're taking me, storm cloud?" Roman asked innocently, rubbing his thumb over Virgil's knuckles.
"I want you to meet my dad." Virgil said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Oh." Roman breathed, feeling a wave of sadness wash over him. Virgil's dad had raised him on his own. They were incredibly close and when he died three years ago, Virgil was crushed.
"Here." Virgil lead Roman through a large iron gate and through several rows of headstones, some surrounded by flowers, some fading, some accompanied by grieving families and friends. Roman's heart twisted at the thought that just three years ago, Virgil was in their position.
Virgil sighed as he stopped walking and read the headstone in front of him.

Patton Underwood
January 15th, 1959 – May 20th, 2016
Loving Father, Wonderful Friend

Roman's eyes paused over the dates on the stone. January 15th. Oh. Oh no. Today was Mr. Underwood's birthday.
Virgil placed a small bouquet of pink lilies on his father's grave, they'd always been his favorite. He plopped down in front of the stone and smiled as his boyfriend followed suit.
"Hi, Pops. It's Virgil. I uh... I brought Roman with me today. That guy I've been telling you about for months." Virgil said softly, a sad smile on his face. Roman paused before turning his attention to the stone, smiling warmly.
"Hi, Mr. Underwood. My name is Roman Prince." Virgil's eyes widened as Roman spoke. "I just wanted to say that you raised a pretty great kid. Your son is the most compassionate, caring, sweet, funny, loving person I've ever met. I'm so happy that he decided to let me into his life and I sincerely hope he lets me stay in it. I love your son with all my heart, and I would've loved to meet you in person." Roman paused for a moment and looked to Virgil, whose eyes were shining with tears.
"He... He loves you so much, Mr. Underwood."
"Patton." Virgil interrupted. "He would've wanted you to call him Patton." Roman smiled.
"He loves you so much, Patton," He corrected. "I mean, he talks about you like you're a saint. From what I've heard, you're like him in so many ways. He misses you." Roman ended his speech and looked to Virgil who hastily wiped his tears.
"You uh... You would be 60 today, Pops, which is insane to me. I... I miss you like crazy... and I just wish you were here." Virgil didn't even bother to keep the tears in anymore. "I wish you were here to call me 'kiddo', and ruffle my hair, and hug me and say it's gonna be okay. Or make me cookies when I'm sad, or tell those stupid puns, or pet every cat at the shelter even though you're allergic." He let out a sound that was somewhere between a sob and a laugh as he leaned into Roman's side. Roman quickly wrapped an arm around his shoulder.
"I love you so much, Pops. Happy birthday." Virgil cried into Roman's shoulder as Roman rubbed his back comfortingly.
After a while, Virgil's tears had subsided to sniffles. Roman spoke quietly, as if the softest sound would break his boyfriend.
"Thank you for bringing me here, Virge." Virgil looked up at him with those big brown eyes. "It uh... it means a lot that you wanted to share your dad with me."
The sun had begun to set when Virgil kissed the top of Patton's headstone, whispering one last 'happy birthday, Pops' before grabbing Roman's hand and leading him out of the graveyard.
"I think he would love you." Virgil spoke after what seemed like an eternity of silence. It was a simple phrase, but it meant the entire fucking world to Roman.
