"So, your Mom-"
"She will want you to call her Rosa. She's very stubborn but very nice." Virgil nodded, mentally quizzing himself on all of the names Roman had told him.
"Carlos is Isa and Manuel's baby, and they have twin boys, Miguel and Marco." Roman reminded him.
"Carlos, Miguel, and Marco are your nephews right?" Virgil asked.
"Yep. Tía Marisol made the tamales, and she loves compliments. The tamales suck but tell her you love them. Tío Santiago is going to interrogate you, but he's harmless, trust me." Virgil scrambled to write down as much as he could.
Roman continued to list a seemingly endless string of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Virgil's head was spinning. Roman pulled into the driveway of his house. It was small but brightly colored with a huge yard where all of his family sat. Chatting, eating, dancing... it was a whirlwind of colors, scents, and sounds. Roman calmed Virgil with a gentle hand on his knee.
"You're going to do wonderfully, Cariño. They're going to love you," Roman paused only to peck Virgil's cheek. "Ready to meet them?" Virgil nodded reluctantly, earning a bright smile. Roman helped him out of the car and walked him to the yard.
"¡Todos! ¡Escuchan!" Suddenly there was silence as everyone turned to look at Roman and Virgil. Roman gestured to his boyfriend with a dramatic flourish. "Este es mi novio, Virgil."
The silence lasted for only a beat longer before all of Roman's aunts swarmed him with questions and judgements. Examining his clothes, his hair, his face, everything. Virgil shot a panicked look at Roman who immediately stepped in.
"Tranquilo, tranquilo, van a asustarlo," Roman punctuated his statement with a hand on Tía Marisol's shoulder. Virgil had no clue what he said but it made them back off.
"C'mon, I want you to meet mis padres." Roman grabbed Virgil's hand and dragged him into the house.
"¡Isa!" Yelled a man holding a crying baby. A young woman who looked just like Roman came out from the hallway. "Carlos está llorando," The man explained.
"¡ISA!" Roman yelled, wrapping the young woman in a hug.
"¡Roman! Oh, hermanito, te extrañe." Isa smiled before releasing the hug. "Is this the boyfriend?" She asked, gesturing to Virgil.
"Yeah, this is Virgil." Roman smiled proudly.
"Hi, Virgil. I'm Isabel—or Isa is fine too—this is my husband, Manuel—" she gestured to the very stressed man holding the baby. "And this little ball of joy," Isa plucked the baby from Manuel's arms and he immediately quieted down. "Is our hijo, Carlos." Carlos reached out and grabbed a lock of Virgil's hair, entranced by the color.
"Well, hello to you too, Carlos," Virgil laughed.
"¡Ernesto, se queda fuera del arroz con leche!" A stern voice sounded from the kitchen.
"Lo siento, mi amor,"
"Ernesto is my dad," Roman whispered to Virgil. "¡Mamá!" He called into the kitchen. A short, stout woman who had to have been Roman's mother they looked so alike, poked her head out.
"Ay, mi Gordito, ¿qué tal?"
"Estoy bien, Mamá," Roman gestured to Virgil. "Este es mi novio."
"Virgil?" She asked. Roman nodded. "Oh, Virgil, it's so nice to meet you! Mi Gordito talks about you all the time— oh, have some rice pudding." Rosa gushed.
"Oh, I see. He gets rice pudding?" Ernesto questioned, arms crossed over his chest.
"Ay, salir de aquí, demonio," Rosa waved him off.
"Te quiero también, Cariño."
Virgil had never been more confused in his life. He took French and the Spanish he did know was limited. But he was so happy to meet the people Roman talked about constantly. They were exactly as he'd described them. Manuel was an anxious mess, especially when dealing with his own kids, Isa was a total badass mom, super chill and laid back, Rosa was stubborn but kind, Tía Marisol's tamales were awful but she blushed and smacked your arm when you stated otherwise, and Tío Santiago grilled him for about 20 minutes before insisting Virgil call him "Tío Santi".~~~~~
"Tío Roman, are you going to sing for us?" Miguel asked, crawling into Roman's lap.
"Oh, I don't know about that, pequeño..."
"C'mon, Tío! You always sing at Sunday dinner!" Marco insisted.
"Yeah, c'mon, Tío," Virgil said with a smirk. Roman rolled his eyes at his boyfriend but couldn't hide his smile. He turned back to Miguel on his lap.
"If you can get mi guitarra, I will sing." With that, Miguel scrambled off of his lap and into the house, Marco trailing behind, yelling, "¡Espera, espera!"
"Do you really sing every Sunday dinner?" Virgil asked, leaning his head on Roman's shoulder.
"Yeah, I do," Roman ran a hand through Virgil's hair absentmindedly. "Do you like my family? I know they can be a lot. I told them about your anxiety so they'd back off a little bit."
"I love them, Princey." Roman smiled and leaned down to kiss Virgil but hey were interrupted.
"¡Tío, Tío! ¡Tu guitarra!" Miguel ran back out of the house, guitar in hand, Marco trailing after him.
"Gracias, pequeño. Darle aquí." Miguel handed Roman the guitar and watched in awe as he tuned it and began to strum.
"What do you guys wanna here tonight?"
"How about Guantanamera?" Manuel asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"Oh, I love Celina!" Roman exclaimed, playing the first few chords. Virgil watched, entranced. He kept trying to focus on the music but he couldn't keep his eyes off of Roman's lips. Fuck, I'm in love.
