The last thing Roman heard was his heart monitor flat-lining. When he opened his eyes he was greeted with a beautiful sight. There was a tall mountain surrounded by colorful mist.
"Do not be afraid," a voice called. The volume shook his bones but still managed to be soft and comforting.
"I am not afraid." Roman's voice surprised him. It was strong and full. He hadn't heard it sound that way since he was in his 20s.
"Good." A figure of the colorful mist materialized in front of him. "Walk with me, child." The figure started to walk, but they seemed to glide, the train of their garments trailing behind them like a stream. Roman stood up, expecting it to be a challenge on his old muscles, but it wasn't. He felt lighter than he had just moments before.
"Where am I?" Roman asked as he fought to keep up with the figure.
"To put it as lightly as I'm able, your life on Earth has ended, child." Roman was astounded.
"I... I died?"
"Yes, in human terms." Their body seemed to ebb and flow as they walked like waves crashing on the the the sand.
"So this is what it's like..." Roman marveled at the beautiful glass floors beneath him, observing the clouds.
"This is the next dimension of your life. We call it The Other Side. There is someone here. He has been waiting for you for ages. He wants to apologize," the being said, a melancholy look on their face. Roman froze. No, no, it couldn't be him. He was dead, he's been dead for nearly 50 years, it couldn't be him. But this is the afterlife after all...
"Hey, Princey." Roman's head whipped around.
He hadn't changed. Same purple fringe, nearly hiding his deep brown eyes, with the same eyeshadow packed underneath them, the same hoodie, the same stupid smirk. Roman's eyes filled with tears before he could stop them. He ran as fast as he could, colliding with Virgil forcefully, sobbing into his hair.
"I missed you too, Roman," Virgil's voice broke and Roman could tell he was crying too. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I didn't want to leave you, I just—" Roman pulled away from the hug and cupped Virgil's face.
"Don't you dare apologize. I was never upset with you, Virgil. Ever. I understand why you did what you did. I... I hate that you felt you had to, but I understand. I missed you, my darling storm."
"I missed you too, my prince." Their lips collided for the first time in 50 years, and it felt as though nothing had changed.
