Mike's POV:
I had on a nice collared shirt and held a red rose that I planned on giving to Jane. I thought a boquet would be too much. I can't believe I did it. I can't believe I asked her out. I can't believe she said yes.
I fixed my collar before grabbing my coat on the way out. I ran down the stairs of my apartment complex and onto the street. I was going to get a cab because it looked as if it was going to rain. The sky was cloudy and dark, and I didn't want to be walking in the rain.
The car finally pulled up to the curb. I was so excited, but also nervous. I hadn't ever been on a date before. Yeah, I was single man. I was always too caught up in my career. I didn't have time for a love life. But Jane was different.
I walked into the restaurant. There she stood, in a dark blue lace dress.
"Jane! You look beautiful tonight."
"Thanks."
"Here, this is for you," I said, handing her the rose.
She paused. She looked a little flustered.
"I'm sorry, I can't do this," she said, running out the door. I chased after her.We ran down the sidewalk of downtown until I finally caught up to her at an intersection.
"Jane, wait! What's wrong? Did I do something wrong? If I did, I'm so sorry! I'll make it up you! I'll-"
"No. It's just, we're not going to work."
"What?"
"I know you like me Mike, but I never really thought about how I felt about you. I don't want to find out either. We're supposed to be rivals, not friends. We just happened to get paired together for one case. Big deal. I never even talked to you before. We would never last as a couple. It'll never be you and me! What's the point in trying? I'm sorry," she said, handing me back the rose.I didn't even follow after her when she walked across the street. I had a feeling that I had never had before. My heart was shattered and I felt broken. I felt stupid for even asking her.
Even worse, it started to rain. I walked along the sidewalk, in the rain. I was soaked and I was crushed.
I saw one of my old coworkers walk by. Well, she works for my corporation. Her name was Jennifer. I decided to go talk to her.
"Hey Jennifer!"
"Oh, hey Mike! How's the Raven Case been?"
"Its been great. Any cases you're working on?"
"Not as of now. It's pouring out here! Come with me, I'll drive you home."
"Really? Thanks!"
"What's that you got there?"
I dropped the rose onto the ground.
"It's not important."We both got into the car. After we took off, I had a terrible feeling in my stomach. Something was wrong.
"Jen, how did you know about the Raven case? It was classified and run through Joyce's corporation.""Guys, I told you he would figure it out."
Suddenly, two hands came from behind my seat and clasped my shoulders.
"Hey Mike, don't take this too personally, okay?" Johnathan said, right before sedating me.
