( chapter four : toy store trips & berated racers )

one thing about working the night shift at lennie's bar & grill was the way that naya was used to going home at four am and taking a nap before getting up to drop grayson off at nursery.

nimra however, rarely worked past midnight, always getting as much sleep as she needed. so when she was woken up at ten am the next morning by naya singing dear maria, count me in at the top of her lungs, the girl was solemnly considering murder as she cuddled into her boyfriends chest.

luke sighed at the sound of his overly gleeful roommate singing at such an hour on a saturday morning. his arms were wrapped around nimra, his intentions of getting any closer halted by her sleepy voice.

"this doesn't mean you're forgiven hemmings. i'm just tired and you're comfy."

trying not to sound to upset, luke mumbled into her hair, "i'll take what i can get from you." the pair lay in silence, listening to the faint sounds of their roommate and son playing in the living room.

sat cross legged on the rug that she had scrubbed clean the previous night, naya hid her eyes behind her hands, playfully whining to the little boy that had told her to count to ten (mind you, that was five minutes ago). "can i look yet gray?" naya asked for the fiftieth time.

grayson panicked, almost dropping the large brown teddy bear he was holding. "not yet!" he screeched. "you haf to count to ten," the little boy said, holding up seven fingers that naya couldn't see.

patiently, naya nodded, beginning her count again.

"one . . . two . . ."

in front of her, grayson hemmings puffed out a breath, tugging at the small brown curls on his head. his frustration resembled his mothers as the toddler groaned and felt tears forming in his baby blues.

it was his quiet sniffles that made naya slowly lower her hands, the light-hearted smile on her face dissipating at the sight in front of her. grayson hid his face behind his favourite teddy bear, lolita, small, pained sounds leaving his throat.

"hey hey hey, baby what's wrong?" naya pulled him into her lap, the boy and the bear both seated on her blue pyjama shorts. grayson didn't look her in the eyes, choosing instead to shove his face into lolita's back and mumble something incoherent.

"little louder gray," she encouraged softly, not wanting to put him off.

"itsth not workin," grayson repeated. "misth claire showed usth a trick but i can't do it." the heartbroken tone of his voice made naya frown. she glanced at the teddy bears and barbie dolls that were scattered around the room that he must have brought from his bedroom while her eyes were covered.
