( chapter thirteen : i challenge thee )
the cheers that erupted from the stands were just as loud as naya remembered, hundreds of people all forming one voice in the dark. they were continuous, naya noted, not even allowing for the time for their screams to echo as physics would predict.
luke, lisa, ashton and naya sat together, all of them on the edge of their seats as they observed carefully. calum and marcus were both doing well, but even a newbie like naya could see that marcus was sloppy, not allowing for sufficient time to take turns, accelerating too harshly and miscalculating distances.
he wasn't a bad driver, perhaps it just looked that was to someone who watched him against calum. his claims of being a 'racer extraordinaire' seemed dull as naya watched calum race past him, leaving a trail of dust behind him.
there were only two laps left, naya hugging her jacket close to her as she crossed her fingers, silently praying for calums win. she wasn't exactly sure who she was praying to, a god that was sympathetic to racers?
dear dominic toretto, don't let calum lose.
and don't let marcus be sad.
and don't let calum get too much of a big head.
y'know, if you're not busy.naya giggled at her own thoughts, paying attention to the end of the race as calum flew past nimra, the girl lowering her flag and the crowds screaming louder, if that was even possible.
naya began to jump in front of luke, "can we go down can we go down can we—"
"yes, yes, hold ashton's hand," luke said sternly and naya did as she was told, pulling at ashton's hand.
"i swear, it's like i've got two kids," luke muttered as the group descended the creaky, chipped wooden staircase that led to the dirt track.
calum opened the door to his car, marcus pulling up behind him and doing the same. both of them shook hands while the people on the stands yelled in approval, calum and marcus both smiling so wide naya feared that their faces would crack.
she hugged nimra, the both of them watching and clapping while luke and ashton went to congratulate calum. a short blonde girl pushed past luke, her body pressing against calum's as her arms snaked around his neck and pulled the victor down, their lips locking together.
it was all drowned out for naya, who quickly looked away from the scene and focussed on the screams that were beginning to die down. the sight of calum's lips pressed against this random girl's made her feel . . . annoyed. and a little bit upset.
he's not yours she told herself.
naya turned to the side, trying not to choke on the confusing thoughts that seemed to be begging for a place in her mind, pushing rationale and happy thoughts out.
