( chapter fourteen : the undefeated )
ashton irwin was ready to either scream, throw himself off a bulding or tear out all his hair. he hadn't decided which one yet.
his fingernails were between his teeth as he listened to nimra ranting about her boyfriend's stupidity. the flag-girl decided that she wasn't going to announce luke's race, letting another flag-girl do it. naya hadn't worked out if this was due to her outrage at the race, or just nimra's nervousness.
too busy worrying about nimra and luke and ashton, naya hadn't noticed that she'd picked at her thumb to the point that her finger was now coated in a thin layer of red.
"shit naya!"
nimra pulled naya's hands, the blue-haired girl's finally falling on the blood that trailed down her hand. her eyes widened and naya began to suck on her thumb.
"he's got this, right?" ashton sounded as if he was trying to convince himself.
calum winced, not wanting to be the one that said the harsh truth. "well, luke's a good racer—was a good racer," he corrected himself. "luke hasn't—it's been a long time."
"and justin isn't a completely crappy racer," lisa added.
"oh god," nimra held her head in her hands and ashton rubbed her back in consolation.
naya, who had never known luke as a racer, asked, "how good was he?"
ashton chuckled, as if remembering something fondly, "luke hemmings? he was the undefeated."
this seemed to grab calum's attention, who smirked as he watched the race in front of him, "was the undefeated, until i came."
for some reason, naya giggled, thinking of the time michael had shook her and told her how impossible it was for calum to be defeated. the memory was soft and enough to make naya smile as she stood up to cheer for luke.
"she seems to fit right in," nimra whispered to ashton, who laughed.
naya, dressed in her lace pink bralette and matching pink skirt, her large blue jacket drowning her as the blue-haired girl screamed at the cars that zoomed past her, definitely did not look like she fit in at the track.
"no!"
everyone jumped up, wanting to see what naya had screamed at.
the girl pointed at the track, her finger shaking, "he—that's not fair!"
ashton's eyes quickly scanned the cars, figuring out what the problem was; justin had taken the lead from luke and there were only two laps left. "well shit," he muttered.
nimra's face was blank as the girl leaned back in her seat, her hand on her forehead while naya made her way over to the girl.
"it's okay," she mumbled, pulling her friend into a hug.
