______________________________________Gunfire and the screams of the dying pervaded Steve's ears as he fought on the battlefield. He viciously killed yet another alien before turning to look at his comrade and lover, Bucky Barnes.
Locked in hand-to-hand combat, he still looked like a supermodel. He became mesmerized as Bucky grabbed a knife, implanting it deep inside of a alien's skull with amazing precision.
Steve was so entranced by the scene before him that didn't see the alien running toward him, until he was flat on the blood-covered ground, intense pain sprouting from every limb and joint in his body. He managed to shake the cloudiness from his head in time to hear Bucky yell his name.
Steve opened his eyes to a slit to see Bucky running toward him. He smiled, but the smile soon dissipated as he saw Bucky fall to his knees, clutching his side and his face distorting into a look of pure anguish.
Steve hastily lifted himself off the ground and grabbed his shield, running forward and throwing it with deadly aim at the alien that shot Bucky. It tore the creature straight in half, black blood and guts spilling out as it let out one last ugly screech before truly dying.
Steve's feet felt weighed down with each step he took toward Bucky. He felt he wouldn't get there in time to help him, but he did; wrapping his arm gently yet firmly around his waist and lifting his weak body off the ground. Bucky placed his arm loosely around Steve's shoulders, his breathing raggedy and his legs wobbly. Scarlet blood trickled through Bucky's fingers as he held his wound, his face portraying the agony he felt.
The chaos of the battle didn't cease as Bucky and Steve trudged across the combat zone; Steve partly dragging Bucky since he didn't have the energy to move himself. Steve didn't hear Tony yelling into his earpiece to return to battle, in fact, everything around Steve became muted to all his senses; he could only hear Bucky's battered breathing, he could only see Bucky's pasty face.
Once they were in a spot devoid of any ongoing battle, Steve lightly laid Bucky down, being extra careful not to move him too much. Bucky gasped as a shard of burning pain sheared through his side. The site of him was purely ghastly, from the sickly appearance of his skin to the goreness of his dreadful wound.
Steve dropped to his knees beside him, ripping layers of armor off Bucky before finally reaching bare, bloody skin. Steve choked back a sob as he briskly ripped a chuck of material from his shirt, placing it over Bucky's laceration and applying slight pressure. The blood seeped through the thin cloth within a minute and coated Steve's hands, making them sticky and warm.
Tears welled up in Steve's eyes and fell as he heard Bucky's breathing become swallow. Bucky stared at Steve, his forehead creasing in concentration, as he was half in and half out of consciousness.
"Steve don't you dare cry," Bucky managed to wheeze out. It was too late though.
Sobs escaped Steve's throat, gut-wrenching and absolutely heartbreaking. His chest heaved up and down as tears rolled down his cheeks like a waterfall. If the fatality of the wound didn't kill Bucky, then Steve's sobbing sure would.
"Aww Stevie...baby..." Bucky was at a complete loss for words, the excruciating pain coming from his side not helping his predicament.
"Steve please stop crying....you're going to make me cry." Bucky let out a raspy chuckle, trying to lighten the somber mood, but to no avail as Steve's cries continued to fill Bucky's ears.
"B-bucky I-I dont want yo- you to d-die." A burst of adrenaline flowed through Bucky as he heard those words stumble from Steve's mouth, his pain now becoming a distant memory as his metal hand clutched at Steve's collar, propelling him toward the fallen solider.
"Steve look me in my goddamn eyes."
"I can't-"
"Look. At. Me."
Steve's sobs were quickly reduced to sniffles, his watery globes peering into his lovers pain-filled ones.
"As long as you are here with me, as long as you are living and breathing, I'm not dying. When I said 'till the end of the line, I fucking meant that. I love you way too much to just give up on you like this."
Watching Steve's mournful expression change into a lopsided smile was like stormy clouds uncovering the sun, brights beams of sunlight basking him in warmth.
Bucky smiled back at him, his flesh hand cupping Steve's cheek, smearing it with some blood as he stroked it soothly. Steve didn't mind one bit; worse things had been placed upon his skin.
"I love you too."
Bucky smiled wider as the distance between them was closing ever so slowly, their lips eventually meeting together in a passionate embrace, their hearts soaring and the need to be even closer rising.
Their fervent kiss came to a halt as a scoff sounded behind them. Steve quickly whipped his head around to identify the intruder.
"I hope you two lovebirds weren't about to do the dirty out on the battlefield-"
"Sam! Bucky is injured severely; now is not the time for jokes."
"Oh right. Sorry Steve. Y'all hold tight; I'll tell Bruce to land the Quinjet out here."
Sam mock saluted at Steve before flying off, leaving the pair alone for the time being.
After watching Sam fly off, Steve turned back to see Bucky's eyes closed. His heart rate began to accelerate until he saw the gentle rise and fall of his chest. Relief flooded through his body, his heartbeat returning to its normal pace. Crouching down, he grabbed Bucky's hand, lacing his thick fingers through Buckys and giving it a squeeze of reassurance.
Even when the Quinjet arrived, Steve still held tight onto Bucky's hand, the slight squeeze he received back giving him hope.
