Dex bit his lip as he asked Keefe the question every single one of his friends had declined so far. "Keefe do you think you could help me watch after a robot baby?"
Keefe's eyebrow raised. "A robot baby?"
"Yep," Dex said, sighing. If anyone was going to find this cool, it'd be Keefe.
"I mean, sure. I don't have anything to do today but listen to dear ol' dad, so why not? Sounds like something that could annoy Ro, so I'm good with it. But I just have one question."
"Shoot."
"Why on earth are you taking care of a robot baby?" Keefe asked this as if Dex was some sort of mental patient. Dex was sure by the end of having Keefe over and a screaming baby he would be.
"My new agriculture teacher, Lady Anselma, thinks it'd be good practice."
"Agriculture? Isn't that supposed to be, like, you know, plants? Not babies?"
Dex groaned. "I don't even know anymore. But she said not to take care of it alone."
"Aww," Keefe cooed. "So you want me to be the dad?"
"Who said you're the dad?"
"Me. Dads are always cooler."
"I heard that!" Juline called from upstairs as Dex snorted.
Keefe paused for a moment before yelling a quick apology.
"So when are you gonna be here? I have to take care of it for about twenty four hours."
Keefe coughed. "Twenty four hours?"
"Yep."
"You're gonna get sick of me and this baby real fast, Dexy. Are you sure you want me in the house with you and that thing?"
Dex shifted uncomfortably. "No, not really, but no one else wants to do it and you seem like you think it's cool."
"Dang right I do. Is it okay if I just come over in a few minutes?" Keefe asked, already getting up off his bed and walking to his closet.
"Yeah, oh, and Keefe?" Dex said.
"Yeah?"
"Just be warned that they baby doesn't talk like elves do. It's more like a human baby than anything else."
Keefe's arm holding a shirt fell as he stared at Dex through the screen. "So is it just going to scream until we figure out what it wants or..."
"Yep. That's actually exactly what's going to happen. I'm not looking forward to it either," Dex added when Keefe groaned.
"I'll see you and the demon spawn in a few."
.-.
"Okay, I know I called it a demon spawn earlier, but this is freaky." Keefe said as he picked up the robot, staring at it's dead, lifeless eyes.
Keefe was certainly right about it looking demonic. Not only were it's glass eyes lifeless, but they also seemed like they moved every once and a while. And every other part of it felt like plastic, plus it's hair wasn't even hair. It was just carved into it's scalp. On it's back and chest was the speaker where it admitted the screaming sound - which thankfully neither of the boys were hearing since it wasn't on - with a sensor on it's stomach that Dex had to swipe a bracelet over before he began doing anything to help it.
"I know." Dex mumbled. "Think we should turn it on?"
"Might as well. Am I sleeping over tonight, by the way?"
