Chapter 19: Cheyenne

"Cheyenne was the most beautiful woman I've ever laid eyes on. She had skin the color of caramel, but in the summer she turned as red as a rose. She always sunburned, never tanned. She had dark brown eyes that when she looked into my own they turned to pools of chocolate. When Jake cut out my tongue she was there for me, she let me cry into her shoulder and she comforted me when my brother couldn't. She understood my newfound struggle and she showed me a new way to overcome it. Cheyenne was Deaf, she grew up speaking American Sign Language and she willingly taught me a new way to communicate. We had lessons every night after our chores. It was a good distraction from our starving bellies. Within a year I was signing fluently and and I've only improved since then. Austin began to join our lessons after he noticed me coming out of my depression and we were able to speak again, after almost six months of just passing notes and playing charades, I was able to talk to my brother again. Cheyenne saved my life" Jackson only used two hands to communicate all of this, and Austin interpreted it so perfectly that I couldn't distinguish who's life I was hearing about. These mortals are absolutely amazing, they've created an entire language just with the use of hands and facial expressions. No words are needed to express their feelings and wants.
"She's sounds amazing. Is she here? Did I send her to Jotenehiem?" I asked.
"Yes. She went with her father."
"Do you love her?"
There was a pause as Jackson looked away and I saw a small smile appear on his lips
"Yes. With all of my heart. I'll give her everything" he smiled. I didn't need Austin's help to understand.
"I will bring her here. I know what it's like to be apart from someone you care for. It damages the heart. After being away from Aceleve for so long I've started to go back to my old ways. I can feel the darkness creeping back over me, and I have to constantly remind myself that Aceleve wouldn't approve, and all I want to do is make her happy."
Jackson's mouth dropped when I told him I would retrieve Cheyenne.
"You would do that for me?"
I nodded and closed my eyes to try and reach the connection to my commanding officer in Jotenhiem.
"I need one of the new recruits sent back to me. Her name is Cheyenne" i told him in my native language. He replied that he understood and within minutes a beam dark clouds appeared beside us and shook the air bubble fiercely, I was afraid it was going to pop. The sand beneath our feet stirred and after the clouds cleared there she stood, just as beautiful as Jackson described. She stood still for a moment to let the vertigo pass and recognition finally appeared on her face as she locked eyes with Jackson. He stood and embraced her tightly. They held each other for a long time. To keep myself from staring I pulled my knife from its sheath in my boot and turned it over and over in between my fingers. They pulled apart and the movement distracted me and I looked up to them. She began to sign to Jackson so quickly that there was no hope in me understanding. Finally they sat beside us and we formed a circle in the small air bubble. I continued to turn the blade over and over in my fingers as the three communicated in their silent language of signs. I felt someone staring at me and glanced up, it was Cheyenne, we locked eyes and I could almost sense pity coming from her brown eyes. Does she pity me? Why would she? How could she? I sent her to a far off and confusing place where the only way she could communicate is through her father, whom I'm assuming knows this American Sign Language as well. I should pity her that she had gone through a life of silence that someone how landed her in a prison in Canada.
"What did the three of you do to wind up in a prison in Canada?" I asked. It just occurred to me that I was working with more than likely people who committed felony crimes. That's fine, the more evil the better. I waited until Jackson finished signing what I asked to Cheyenne.
"I smuggled bomb parts across the boarder for some nasty people." Austin offered first.
"I murdered the commanding officer who caught my brother and put him in prison" Austin interpreted for Jackson. My eyebrows rose in pleasant surprise and I stared expectantly at Cheyenne, interested to hear her story.
"I worked alongside Natasha Romanoff in Russia. During one of our missions for the Soviet Union they used me as bait to draw out S.H.E.I.L.D. It worked and I was cornered and captured on sight." She explained. So she has ties to S.H.E.I.L.D, which could be useful.
"Do you have any special weapons training" I asked.
"She's the best sniper you'll ever meet. And has some pretty impressive interrogation techniques as well. She doesn't even have to hear you speak to know that you're lying. Even the slightest involuntary finger twitch tells her everything she needs to know". I watched as Austin explained all of this and Jackson sign everything he says. I nodded, it seems to me that these people aren't that bad, they just got wrapped up doing some what most people would call evil things. I see it as just making a mess, which is the most fun way to live. The air was beginning to feel stale as our conversations continued. I swallowed and looked up into the calm black waters that surrounded us. The only light we had was that of the flashlights that was being used to shine light on Austin, Jackson, and Cheyenne's hands. How much air we used as the three explained their stories has me concerned with how much viable air we have left. The sound of plastic rustling caught my attention and I looked back at my team, Austin had pulled out a package of what looked like food out of his backpack. I don't blame him, only being able to eat once a month and then doing as much physical activity that we accomplished today can leave someone hungry. I shook my head no as Austin offered the package to me. The mortals are weaker and will need all the resources they can to survive my journey. Once we get to the United Kingdom I have yet to decide if I'm going to send Austin, Jackson, and Cheyenne back to Jotemheim or if I'm going to keep them with me as I look for this damned book. The three of them could prove to be quite useful.
"Aceleve, darling can you hear me?" I called silently.
"Yes, what's happened on your adventure, you haven't spoken to me since you left Asguard"
"A lot of things have gotten in my way from being able to speak to you"
"Will you tell me everything now?"
Aceelve asked, she sounded so intrigued, she's practically begging me to tell her what's happened. I laid down on the sand and put a arm behind my head and began to tell her everything that's happened since landing in Africa, leaving out the part about Damian, that I will tell her in person. Perhaps with Cheyenne with me to tell me if Aceleve is lying or not.
