You had picked up the language enough to get by, got yourself a job selling souvenirs in a small tourist hut along the beach in the mornings and spent the afternoons swimming around the island.

You didn't want to make any friends here, the weight of your secret being too much for anyone to handle.

A life of science experiments just didn't seem like that great of a time should someone find out and your secret was let loose.

You were happy enough though, swimming around making friends with the dolphins and collecting rare shells/fossils you stumbled upon while gliding along the ocean floor.

It also made for a nice side business, allowing you to afford the small beach house on a more secluded residential part of the island.

You had swam to work this morning but arrived early which lead you to your resting place on the rocks a mile out from the main shore.

You basked in the sun and relaxed until the alarm on your new waterproof watch suddenly went off.

You sighed, switching it off.

"Time to be human again" you said to the crab skittering across the rock beside you.

No, you couldn't talk to the sea life, but for some reason you felt peace in talking at them as if they understood.

You grabbed the bag you'd hooked over an anchor that was left abandoned on your little rock formation, another waterproof item you had recently invested in, and threw it across your body.

You dove into the sea and down to the sandy floor with one flip of your tail, swimming over to a small area of private beach.

You kept a towel there in an old beach bag you shoved between the rocks for the times you decided to swim instead of bike to work.

You hoisted yourself onto the beach, threw your wet hair into a top knot and furiously dried your tail off. Watching impatiently as your legs returned.

Standing up and pulling your sundress out of your bag you quickly changed and walked the short distance to the tourist beach.

You stepped through the edge where the rocks left just enough space to shimmy through, stepping out into what seemed like another world.

The main boardwalk was coated in sand from the public beach to your right, tourists and locals alike smiling and talking as they browsed the many shops along the coast.

You weaved in and out of the crowds, nodding to the few shop owners that spotted you as the local foreigner of the area.

You turned onto the path that lead down to the waterfront souvenir shop, chucking your towel over the bike rack outside and pushing the door to step into the store.

The familiar sound of the door chimes signaled your entrance to your boss who was most likely sleeping in the back.

"Y/N?" A sleep-filled hoarse voice came from behind the staff room door, "is that you?"
