Charlotte (36)

"What?" Jace asked. His voice sounding distant and hurt in his own ears. It was as if the world had stopped spinning. He couldn't believe what she was saying and just as he went to pass by Jocelyn a tiny gasping sound filled the room and then Jocelyn was screaming. She was jumping on the spot and laughing with tears dripping down her face and onto the table. Jace needing to see what it was pushed Jocelyn aside. Not too gently and almost fell to his knee's. his baby girl was breathing. She still wasn't crying but she was breathing. She was tiny and adorable. Wrapped in a pink blanket.

"She's breathing" Jocelyn was saying over and over again. As if having to reassure herself. Jace felt himself smile at the tiny bundle. He had a boy, a feisty warrior. But this was his little girl. The person who would drain his credit card and take shopping trips with Clary to buy him new clothes. She was lying with her eyes closed and her tiny fingers open across her chest. She had a collection of fluffy blonde hair on her head and Jace longed to look at her surely green eyes. He felt a hand on his shoulder and didn't turn to see Clary stood behind him. She reached past him and put her finger to charlotte's hand. Who clutched her tiny fingers around it. He could feel Clary smiling and he was smiling himself. He was so sure he had lost his little girl. She was a born fighter.

Clary was lying on an infirmary bed with charlotte sleeping soundly in her arms. Her mother, Maryse. Izzy and simon were in the room with her. After izzy had insisted on seeing her favourite niece, her only niece. Simon had been informed about her near miss and had said he was here for her. But he was also playing with charlotte. Clary guessed he missed amy being that size. And Luke. He hadn't come to visit since she had gone into labor. She longed to see him and for him to see charlotte. Who had surprised Jace when she had honey gold eyes. She was all Jace. All angles, gold eyes and hair. And the stubbornness on her face whenever Clary tried to bottle feed her was all Jace as well. She was his female carbon copy. And she was strong. Jace had gone to fetch Jake to show him his baby sister. Leaving charlotte seemed especially hard for him, but Clary had insisted she would still be here when he got back. So reluctantly he had left. Insisting he would be five minutes max.

"She's just like Jace" izzy said with a smile as charlotte looked over towards izzy. "The eyes i mean. And hair" izzy said. Mimicking Clary's earlier thought.

"I know, i hope she's not as tough to cope with" Clary said with a shaky laugh. She was pretty tired. And to be fair, had reason to. She should of been resting and everyone tried to make her but she wanted to see Jake's reaction to his little sister. And also it was hard once you had hold of charlotte to let go.

"You should rest after Jake's been" simon said. Taking on her mothers role of over protective parent.

"Have you ever given birth?" Clary asked him sarcastically and he looked momentarily taken back.

"No" he said slowly. As if calculating what she was on about.

"Then you don't know do you?" She said dryly and he half smiled at her.

"I know you look like your about to pass out" he said whilst raising a hand in defence.

"But after you've seen Jake, i know" he said with a smile, one that she returned sweetly. Her mom was sat in the corner watching charlotte fondly.

"Why charlotte?" Izzy asked with a frown. As if she didn't like the name.

"Well, i liked the name. And Jace didn't mind. He named Jake" Clary said like a five year old. But before izzy could say anything in response the doors burst open and Jake ran into the room. With an angry looking Jace behind him.

"Mommy!" Jake squealed and scared charlotte, who began to cry immediately. Jake looked as if he was about to run at Clary but Jace lunged forward and picked him up in one arm. Swinging a giggling Jake under his armpit with no effort. But Jace wasn't smiling. He looked annoyed, that Jake had woken Charlotte.

"Jake" Jace said sternly and Jake stopped laughing. "Mommy's been through a lot lately and isn't too well. But she has a new friend for you to meet" he said, suddenly cracking into a smile.and as he did, a crying charlotte stopped. Watching her daddy fondly. Jake looked at him confused and then over to Clary.

"Is my sister here?" He asked hopefully and Clary felt herself smile and all the others as well.

"She is" Clary said. She was beginning to feel really tired but had to introduce Jake to his baby sister. Jace slowly made his way over to Clary. Jake still tucked under his arm. Both of them watching charlotte as they moved. Jace put Jake down next to Clary who was looking down at charlotte in awe. Both boys were. Jake slowly moved his hand and touched charlotte's hand with his finger.

"She's smwall" Jake said. His smile lazy and sweet.

"You have to be careful with her" Jace said sternly, but his smile was just as lazy.

"When can she pway twains whith mwe?" Jake asked sweetly and Clary heard herself and Jocelyn laugh.

"When she's a bit bigger" Clary said with a smile, and felt herself slowly closing her eyes. Warm hands pried hers away from charlotte and carefully lifted her, Clary didn't need to open her eyes to see Jace smiling down at charlotte in his arms. She felt comforted having a room full of family. All amazed and awed by the new member of the family. She felt a warm hand brush her cheek as she began to fall to sleep, and a whisper in her ear as Jace pulled a blanket over her.

"My brave girl" he said sweetly and she fell to sleep. With his harmonic tone in her ears, and the loving hope that their lives could stay like this for ever.

Aha we couldn't kill off little charlotte now could we ;) hope i didn't give you guys to bad a scare. But she is a well loved character already. All Jace, which could only mean trouble ;). Lets hope her daddy can handle her xD i mean Jake's a big enough hassle as it is. Now he's got a partner in crime... Next chapter will be a lot longer ;£ Thanks for reading guys.
