"You're telling me you had Reece Bibby's number and you just smudged it! Why did you get in the shower before writing it down? Actually, the real question is why didn't you call him the second he left your flat?" My best friend Leah, who I met the second day I moved to Accrington, was sitting at the end of my bed, her legs crossed underneath her.
"Okay, one, I didn't actually know who they were. I mean they had just broken into my apartment! Second, well I don't really have a second I just felt like pretending I had another reason." I covered my head with my hands, leaning back against my headrest.
"You're ridiculous. You were so close to finally finding a boyfriend after being here for a month and you blew it!"
"Boyfriend? I think you're reading into the whole situation a little too much." I shook my head, laughing at her unrealisticness.
"Guess we'll never know." She sighed. "Maxine is going to kill you when she finds out. She probably would have killed you either way actually since Reece is her favorite." She shrugged before getting off of my bed.
"Where are you going? I haven't finished feeling sorry for myself yet." I stood up and followed her as she left my room and headed towards my desk. She ignored my question and sat down in front of my laptop. She typed "Bibby" + "Accrington" into the search engine.
"Are you seriously trying to look him up right now?"
"Don't be silly. We'd be searching through articles on New Hope Club and Stereo Kicks for hours if I did that."
"Stereo Kicks?"
She turned to face me, a judgemental look on her face. "You really know nothing about him, do you?"
"Why do you know so much?"
"My sister literally talks about him none stop. I try to block her out but bits of information have slipped into my mind. I don't really understand why she talks about him though."
"Um, what's that supposed to mean?" I leaned down so our heads were level.
"Blake is obviously the cutest out of the three." She didn't look at me when she said this, her focus still on attempting to, well, I wasn't actually sure what she was doing.
"You do realize he's the one who took my phone from me, right?"
"It's not like they were actually trying to hurt you. Besides, he was making sure you didn't call the cops on them."
"Are you seriously defending him right now?"
"Does it really matter? Our focus shouldn't be on how you met them, it should be on figuring out how to get you to see them again." She continued to scroll through websites on my computer.
"Leah, it's hopeless. I lost his number. He probably thinks I'm not interested at this point."
"So you're just giving up? Where's your sense of adventure? Aren't writers supposed to love a good story?" She narrowed her eyes at me, as if she was judging my profession, or in my mind lack there of since I hadn't even published a book yet.
"Writers do love good stories. This isn't a story. This is real life. Real life doesn't have happy endings or magic or plots that get resolved."
She stared at me shocked. "When did you turn into such a pessimist?"
I shrugged and turned away from my desk, heading towards my kitchen. I grabbed peanut butter from my cupboard and was about to grab some bread when I heard Leah walk into the kitchen behind me.
"Hey!" I yelled when she grabbed the peanut butter out of hand. "I'm trying to make a sandwich."
"I noticed. Did you forget we're going out for lunch later?" She put the peanut butter back in my cupboard despite my protests.
