CHAPTER 13: BROTHERS

Edmund sat in his cold cell, desperately hoping that his younger sister had managed to escape safely. He looked up as Jadis entered his cell. Anger spreaded across her face when she realised that Lucy wasn't there. "Where is your sister?" Jadis questioned, glaring down at him. "I don't know. I was sleeping and when I woke up she was gone" Edmund lied. "Liar" The Witch stated as she kicked him in the face, causing Edmund to double over in pain. "I'm telling the truth...it's your choice whether you believe me or not" Edmund stated, sitting up again, dizziness rushing over him. "Well...since your sisters have managed to somehow escape this place, I better keep you and your brother together so that you can both be watched at all times" she said and called for her guards. Two Telmarine soldiers untied Edmund before forcing him upstairs. They unlocked the cell door. It was dark at first and Edmund assumed that the cell was empty, that was until he saw his half conscious, sat up against the wall. Before he could say anything, they pushed him to the ground and left the cell, locking the door behind him.

"Peter..." Edmund said and quickly rushed over to his brother. "What have they done to you?" Edmund asked, noticing countless bruises and cuts on his brother. "I...I'm fine..." Peter said, his voice getting weaker every minute. Edmund almost laughed at this comment. "Peter, you're clearly not fine, so don't even try to lie to me" he said. He quickly untied the ropes that peter could finally move his hands. "Thanks..." Peter muttered and gave Edmund a grateful smile. "Are Susan and Lucy alright?" Peter asked. "They escaped" Edmund explained as he assessed the extent of Peters injuries. Peter smiled and sighed with relief. "Oh, Thank Aslan for that! I'm just glad they're safe" he said with a smile. Edmund was about to respond when the cell door was opened once again.

This time both Jadis and Miraz walked inside. Peter, moved towards Edmund and sat in front of him, shielding him from Jadis. Jadis just rolled her eyes at this gesture. "You're trying desperately to take care of your family and look brave, but I've never seen anyone more weak" Jadis commented. Peter looked down in defeat. He was truly aware of how weak he looked, but that was never going to stop him from protecting his only brother from that monster. "Now that it's just the two of you, maybe at least one of you can finally tell me where the other Narnians are hiding" she explained, his gaze shifting to Peter. Peter laughed slightly at how eager she sounded. "For the last bloody time...I'm not telling you anything..." Peter said. "Oh, I think you will..." Jadis said and nodded towards Miraz, who suddenly forced Peter away from Edmund. "No!" Peter shouted as he struggled against Mirazs grasp. "Maybe this will get you to give me an answer when I want one" Jadis said as her face suddenly connected with Edmunds face. She made a knife appear and held it at Edmunds throat. "Pete...don't say anything" Edmund said as he started worrying for the Narnians safety. Peter gave his brother a terrified glance, for he did not want Edmund to get hurt. Edmund cried out in pain as the knife was dug into his throat. "No...don't! Stop hurting him!" Peter yelled but Jadis didn't stop. "Please!" Peter shouted over Edmunds cries. Jadis just pretended not to hear him and continued to torture Peters younger brother. Peter couldn't take it any longer. "The shuddering woods!" Peter shouted as he shut his eyes in remorse. He had been such an idiot. He had just told the white witch where some of the Narnians were hiding.

A familiar smirk appeared on her face as she let go of Edmund and let him drop to the floor. "Now that wasn't so hard, was it..." Jadis commented as Miraz shoved Peter back to the ground. Edmund was whimpering in pain but he tried to hide his painful expression the best he could. Miraz and Jadis suddenly left without saying another word to either of them.

Even though Peter felt a rush of pain flow through his body whenever he tried to move, he remained strong for his brother. Edmund needed him and that's all that mattered. "Ed..." Peter said in concern as he helped his brother sit up against the wall. He gently touched Edmunds neck to find small beads of blood dripping from it. Edmund flinched away in pain at the sudden touch to his injuries. "Sorry..." Peter said. "I know I shouldn't have told them but...she was torturing you..." Peter said, feeling guilty about telling Jadis about the Narnians, but also feeling relieved that Edmund was still alive. "It's okay, Pete...we just really need to get out of here" Edmund said as he fought back to pain in his neck and turned his anger into sudden determination. Peter nodded and attempted to stand up but from all of his injuries and the loss of blood, he dropped back down to the floor as soon as he took one step. "Peter! Be careful!" Edmund said as he helped his brother sit up. "You don't always have to be the strong one that takes care of everyone, you know..." Edmund said. "sometimes you have to let your family take care of you". Peter nodded slightly at his brother, a familiar dizzy feeling returning to his mind. "Look! Jadis was stupid enough to leave her knife here..." Edmund said as he picked up the small knife, still covered in his blood.

They suddenly heard footsteps coming back up the staircase and towards their cell. "Not again..." Peter muttered and sighed. Edmund quickly got up and hid at the wall of the door, so that whoever walked into the room wouldn't immediately see him. "It's probably Jadis and Miraz again" Edmund thought. He was planning on attacking whoever walked through that cell door, and then he was gonna get Peter the hell out of there. The cell door slowly creaked open. As soon as Edmund saw the hand on the doorknob, he grabbed the person by the hand and held the knife at them. A small scream escaped the person that Edmund was holding. A very familiar scream. Edmund glanced down at the person he was grabbing. Lucy.

"Lucy!" Edmund explained, overjoyed to see her. "Miss us?" Lucy said with a giggle. "Us?" Edmund questioned, realising that Lucy must not be alone. "we came to get you out of here" Susan said, also walking into the cell. "We weren't just going to leave you behind" she added. Lucy and Susan both glanced over at Peter and both gasped at his condition. Lucy rushed over to him and opened her healing cordial but Peter pushed it away. "No, Lucy. Save it for when we get back to the how. I can handle getting out of here" peter insisted. "Are you sure? You literally just attempted to walk and you dropped back down in 2 seconds flat"  Edmund said and folded his arms at his brother. "Let's just get to safety and then you can all deal with my injuries" Peter said and gave Lucy a reassuring smile. Edmund nodded and helped Peter up. Peter ended up leaning against Edmund, trying to maintain his balance. Susan took Peters other arm and helped him.

"Come on! There are two griffins outside!" Lucy said as they all left the cell. At the bottom of the long staircase, two of Miraz's guards lay dead on the floor, with two of Susan's arrows piercing their hearts. Edmund had always been impressed by Susan's archery skills, and he had never been more thankful to her than in this moment.

They (luckily) managed to get into the main courtyard without being caught by any Telmarine soldiers. In the middle of the yard, stood two large griffins, waiting for the monarchs to escape on them. "Okay...we'll go back in groups of two. Susan, you go with peter and make sure he doesn't pass out..." Edmund ordered. Susan nodded and helped Peter onto the first griffin. Peter insisted on riding the griffin and the only reason Susan agreed to this was because if he did end up passing out, he wouldn't fall off from the front. Susan kept her arms tightly around Peters waist as the Griffin suddenly took flight and soared into the distance.

"We'd Betty hurry" Edmund said to Lucy, helping her into the griffin first. "Edmund...your neck..." Lucy said as she noticed that his neck had started to bleed again. "Don't worry about it Lu" he replied as he also climbed onto the griffin, sitting in front of her. Suddenly he felt a drop of Lucy's cordial being forced into his mouth, almost making him choke. "Lucy!" Edmund shouted as he was caught off guard. "Sorry...But you needed it" she said with a comforting smile. Edmund hated to agree with her, but she was right. In a matter of seconds he started to feel a lot better. He glanced back at Lucy before ordering the griffin to take flight. "Hold on tight" he said to Lucy as she wrapped her arms around his waist. She giggled with excitement as they soared through the air. The four monarchs were finally out of the witch's reach. For now...
