Again, I hope you understand that (Y/N) is Kakashi's age in this oneshot. The large amount of Kakashi x Student!Reader fics that are out there bothers me,,, -obi
Your eyes fluttered open. Not even realising where you were, you tried to prop yourself up on your elbow, but immediately regretted it as you felt a jolt of pain race through your shoulder, waking you up completely. You finally took in your surroundings, finding yourself in a hospital bed.
"Thank God," a deep voice mumbled beside you. "You're awake."
As you turned to look at the man sitting in the chair beside your bed, you remembered why you were in the hospital. Not because you had had some scrape with death, although, judging by the look on his face, he seemed to have thought so. You see, you were a fairly decent shinobi ("youthful", as Guy once described you), but you tended to get a bit carried away. So, while on a mission with your childhood friend Kakashi, you got a little too cocky and ended up overusing your chakra. Which explained why you were in a hospital bed going through chakra withdrawal at the moment. (that makes it sound like chakra is like heroin or something -obi)
"You say that like I'm dying or something," you smirked at Kakashi, playfully punching his shoulder.
"Hey, can't a guy care for a girl's wellbeing?" Kakashi frowned jokingly.
There was an awkward silence as you couldn't think of a rebuttal. Your eyes wandered to the ceiling, while his strayed down to study the scuffs on the floor. A question lingered in the back of your mind. You dreaded to hear the answer, but you knew that if you didn't ask, it would bother you forever.
"Why do you care so much anyway?" You mumbled, still staring up.
He looked up at you again quickly, perhaps too quickly. "What kind of question is that?" He asked, an annoyed, almost angry tone in his voice. "You're one of my closest friends. We've know each other since academy, (Y/N)."
"Yeah, but why?" You repeated. "Why are we friends anyway?"
He suddenly snickered, and you turned to look at him. A nostalgic look was on his face. "Don't you remember?" He chuckled, returning your gaze. "You used to throw paper wads at the back of my head whenever I'd be a smart-ass back in the academy. All the paper would say was 'shut up', really small. And I'd turn around and glare at you every time, and you'd just smirk that same old smirk." He sighed, remembering the good old days.
His eyes turned to yours, and you knew what he was thinking about as you saw the sadness deep in them. "You were there for me, (Y/N). You were there for me when-" he paused, not wanting to say it. "When Obito and Rin died. When Minato-sensei died. You were there for me." His voice was barely audible as he spoke. "And I... I just wanted to repay the favor."
He paused, studying the floor for a moment, then looking back into your eyes.
"I don't want to lose you, (Y/N)."
Your eyes widened. You never knew that he felt that strongly about you. You sat up slightly, ignoring the pain as you captured him in a tight embrace. He hesitated for a moment before wrapping his own arms around you, returning the gesture. You felt his shaky breaths.
"I'm sorry," you mumbled into his shoulder, as if you had something to apologize for.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," he whispered. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."
"Sounds cliche. Like a crappy romance novel or something..." you joked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Do I have to be more obvious? You're so dense sometimes, honestly." He teased, making you frown. "How did I even manage to fall in love with you?"
You pulled away from the embrace, disappointing him for a second. You looked him in the eyes, not believing what he just said. "Could you repeat that?"
His eyes wandered before locking back onto yours. He blushed. "I love you."
You smiled such a loving, gentle smile at him, making his heart melt. "Kakashi," you breathed, the smile evident even in your voice, "I love you too."
He pulled you back into a loose embrace, resting his forehead on yours. His silver hair hung down and tickled your face and you stared into each other's eyes, falling into a comfortable silence.
"Well, you're looking better already!" Tsunade said, walking into the room and startling you both, reminding you that you were in the hospital. You let out a small noise- a squeak, really- and fell back onto the bed, reminding you of your pain. You winced.
"Was I interrupting anything?"
"No, no! Not at all!" Kakashi chuckled nervously, blushing and rubbing the back of his neck. You shot him a look.
"Nothing at all."
