Pacing, I run my hands through my hair, waiting for Callan's doctor. Sally arrived as soon as she heard about Callan and is currently raging at some nurse about suing them.
"Jesse. Stop pacing, please." Lucas asks, tiredness leaking into his voice.
Guiltily, I look at Lucas. "Sorry. You should get some sleep."
"So should you." Lucas replies.
Adamantly, I shake my head. "I'm not sleeping until I know for sure if he's okay or not."
"Same here." Lucas says.
The doors bang open, and two police officers scan the waiting room. Their eyes zero in on us and they head in our direction. "Miss and Mr Rain?" One of them asks.
Eyeing each other, we both slowly nod. "Yes, that's us." Lucas answers.
"We need to take your statements." The other says. It's a demand rather than a question.
I glare at them. "That can wait. Wondering whether someone we love is dying or not can't." I snap furiously.
"We'll sort that out immediately." Officer number one walks away and speaks to the nurse, who nods at whatever he's saying and walks away. Then he turns to Sally and says something to her, leading her over to us.
The officers sit beside us as a doctor heads in our direction. "Immediate family of Callan Finch?"
Sally stands shakily. "I'm his mother. And Lucas and Jesse here are already like family. How is he? Is he okay?" Sally fires off question after question.
The doctor nods. "Well, luckily the bullet didn't reach anywhere vital. We've stopped the bleeding and sewn him up. He's currently sleeping. We'll keep him drugged until the pain has mostly passed. When he is discharged, we'll give you medication to prevent the pain."
We all sigh in relief. "Thank you thank you thank you." Sally blubbers through tears.
I lean in and hug her tightly, smiling in thanks to the doctor. He simply nods back before walking away.
Officer number two says, "I know this is good news, and not a good time, but we need your statements immediately."
I pull away from Sally and nod at them. "Fine. Let's get it over with."
Lucas places a hand on my arm. "You sure, Jesse?" He frowns, concerned.
Smiling reassuringly, I say, "Yeah, I'm sure."
"This way." Officer number one says.
"Sally, come on." I say.
She frowns, confused. "What?"
"You should know what happened." I say, smiling sadly at her.
Still looking confused but trusting my judgment, she follows us a secluded place. Lucas goes first, since his will take less time. It seems he didn't know as much as I thought he would - he only knew that John had murdered Jake and that he was determined to get revenge on Callan. He had no idea why.
When Lucas finishes, the police officers nod at him. "Thank you." They turn to face me. "Miss Rain, please tell us everything you know in as much detail as possible."
Swallowing loudly, I tell them everything. From the day I met Maddox to being taken to the warehouse. The officers thank me and turn to walk away, but I stop them. "Will he go to prison?" I ask.
They both nod, and police officer one answers, "Yes. There is too much evidence against him; there's no way for him to get out of this. He murdered his own son in front of our eyes. If we find no evidence for him murdering Mr Jake Kain, he'll definitely be in prison for the murder of Maddox Kain."
