It was late in the afternoon. We had been patrolling the forest all day, the sun's weak beams slicing through the thick leaves above us.
It was freezing, to say the least. The cold winds slapped us this way and that. To be honest I thought Slenderman would make us come inside.
                                  But he didn't.
I scanned the woods one last time and shifted into a wolf to scent the air. It was about time to head back, thankfully.
But right as I sniffed, a horrible stench carried by the breeze clogged up my nostrils. It was so bad, in fact, that it caused my eyes to water. I retched, a bout of coughing following as I immediately tried to block it out.
The smell was extremely overwhelming. Like a piece of rotting piece of meat that had boiled in the sun all day with a twinge of blood scent.
"What's wrong with you?" Jeff asked, seeing as I looked like I was about to vomit.
I shifted into a human, but the smell still wouldn't leave my nostrils.
"There's an awful smell near here." I gasped, my stomach feeling weak.
"Are you gonna lead the way or are we just gonna sit here?" Jeff huffed, twirling his knife between his fingers with an unamused expression on his face.
I reluctantly shifted into a wolf, bracing myself. I sniffed the breeze once more, almost immediately gagging again.
I clenched my jaw and followed it, vomit crawling up my throat. I jumped over a log, listening to Jeff crunch the leaves as he walked behind me.
Then, right as I pulled myself through some thorn bushes and stood up, the scent hit me like a punch in the face.
I choked and turned away, shifting into a human as my knees buckled. Jeff came from behind, gagging as well.
I blew chunks into a bush, a nausea wave crashing over me. This is awful..
My eyes watered, every hair on my body telling me to get out of there. I plugged my nose, blinking the water from my eyes and reluctantly turning around to face the source of the horrid smell.
An animal I could hardly recognize was splayed on the ground, it's guts torn from its body and scattered everywhere. Blood soaked the grass and bones littered the ground. I gasped, almost able to taste the awful smell.
"Wh-What the hell!" Jeff sputtered. It looked like it had definitely been there for longer than just a day.
"We need t-to get the others." I said, squinting my eyes.
"Let's do that." Jeff replied, already pushing his way through the bushes as quickly as possible.
I wanted as far from that animal as possible. I wouldn't be able to stomach another look at that thing.
"That was horrible." I commented when we got a fair distance from the smell. My throat was burning from the acid, my cheeks flushed.
I could see Toby and Clockwork waiting for us, their backs slumping in relief as they spotted us. Night was coming, and we were all overexcited to get back inside.
"Y-you guys f-fi-find an-anything?" Toby asked as we approached.
"Unfortunately." I replied in a defeated tone. Jeff growled from beside me, irritation clearly written on his face.
"I guess we'll have to go check it out, then." Clockwork sighed, looking to Jeff and I expectantly.
"W-well l-l-lead th-the way." Toby stuttered, seeming quite disappointed himself. Jeff huffed and spun on his heel, beginning to trudge off toward the decaying animal.
