Chapter 20:
Alex leaned against Tobin as they walked across the campus, back to the dorms. Alex wasn't in too much pain but she used any excuse to be close to Tobin and Tobin didn't mind at all.
"How did your mom enjoy the game?"
Tobin forced out a small smile, "She wished I was out there but overall, she thought you guys did great." Alex plopped down on the unmade bed, "Did she like Kelley and JJ?"
"Oh yeah until Kelley was a dumbass and told my mom how her and Hope met." Tobin still couldn't believe that Kelley was so oblivious to what she was saying, "You should have saw my mom's face after hearing that."
Alex let out a loud laugh, motioning for her girlfriend to join her, "Did she say anything about it though? Like did she seem fine with two girls dating?" Tobin knew the longer they stayed on the topic, the more likely the truth would come out. She sat gingerly next to the injured forward before placing a small kiss on her temple, "She seemed fine with it, but let's focus on you. Do you want me to bring you anything? Food?" Their hands intertwined, allowing Alex to pull her closer, "Hmm, I can definitely eat something..." The word dragged out and lingered in the air. Hands started to move under clothes, heart rates fastened, and time seemed to slow as the two girls lost themselves in each other.
"How are you so perfect?" Alex moaned out as Tobin scattered kisses along her neck and collarbone. The ex-midfielder ignored the question because she knew she wasn't perfect and that she was actually hiding something. Tobin moved her hands to Alex's waistband, toying at it in a way of asking for consent.
Alex grabbed a fistfull of her shirt, pulling her body on top of hers, "You better hurry up, Heath. I don't do well with waiting."
Tobin didn't need to hear anything else. She pulled down her shorts and underwear in one fluid motion, leaving the star forward half naked. Alex started to kiss up Tobin's neck before leaving a small hickey right underneath her earlobe, "Why am I the only one getting naked?"
"Because I want to..." Tobin was cut off by her phone ringing and automatically knew it was her mother, "answer my mom before she thinks I am ignoring her." She scrambled off Alex, grabbing her phone, "Hey mom!"
The conversation was short but Tobin's expression changed, "Yeah okay, love you too."
Alex tilted her head slightly, "So are we going to continue or...?" Tobin let out a forced laugh but shook her head, "No, my mom wants to get dinner with us."
"Ooo, I got an invite. This is perfect time to tell her about us!" Alex said excitedly. Tobin wanted to tell her, she really did but when she looked into her big blue eyes, the pain of upsetting her was too much. She couldn't explain why she wouldn't admit to her mom that they were dating and at the same time, she didn't understand why she just couldn't admit that to Alex.

Tobin didn't know how it happened but suddenly she was sat at some restaurant with her girlfriend and mom. Cindy discussed the game with Alex and shared light jokes about how Tobin would send in the best balls. The appetizer came and went with conversation flowing but no one noticed that Tobin was nervously sweating and saying very little.
"Oh Alex, Kelley told me about how she's dating your goalkeeper. Isn't it a little odd that she is dating a senior?"
Alex furrowed her eyebrows, "I mean I wasn't the biggest fan when she told me but I know Hope quite well and I believe they are really good for each other. Kelley may be young but she knows how to make good decisions." Tobin internally laughed because even though she's only known the Georgia-native for a month or so, she certainly did not make good decisions.
Tobin tried hard to move the conversation somewhere else but Cindy seemed to be stuck on it, "And your other teammate, Christen, is dating Julie. It seems odd how fast they got into relationships as freshman."
'I mean Julie and Christen dated in high school, so that isn't a very new relationship," Alex shot a glance to Tobin that basically read 'you should tell your mom about us now, you idiot.'
Their entrees arrived thankfully and conversation ceased momentarily allowing the three women to enjoy their food. "Anyways, Tobin was telling me how you are single which is a shame because I think you would make any guy very lucky." Tobin choked on her food, covering it with a cough. Her face burned red and her eyes darted to avoid Alex's.
"Oh, Tobin said I was single?" Alex questioned with vicious tone.
Cindy didn't bother to notice her daughter's nervousness, "Yes, I thought maybe you two were together but she quickly assured that you two were just friends. Silly me for assuming."
"Yes, I understand why one may think that however. If you would excuse me, I need to use the ladies room," Alex threw her napkin down on her chair before shooting a glare at her still silent girlfriend." Once Alex was away, Tobin let out a low growl of anger.
"Weird, by that reaction, it surely doesn't seem like you two are 'just friends'," Cindy poked while taking a sip of her wine. Tobin didn't know what to say or do really. She still couldn't read what her mom thought about the whole situation.
"What was that for, mom?"
"I'm not dumb Tobin, as I said earlier. I knew you two were dating yet you blatantly lied to me and from the looks of it, you lied to Alex also. Why?"
Tobin sighed, ruffling her hair, "I don't know, I didn't want to disappoint you-"
"Disappoint me? Never Tobin Powell Heath. I am more disappointed that you weren't honest with me. Alex is a lovely girl and I can see how much you care about her. But your relationship is never going to survive if you can't be honest with her."
Alex came back with small tear stains, "Thank you Cindy for the dinner, but I have to be going. Have a safe flight back." And with that, she was out of the building. Tobin wanted to run but at the same time wanted to give Alex her space.
"What? You're not going to go after her?"
Tobin just shook her head and continued to pick at her food, "Thanks for visiting."
"Don't blame this on me, Tobin. Who knows how long you would have kept this from me if I didn't call it out. You should be ashamed for lying, it is sinful to lie." Tobin was getting more upset the more her mom talked. She only lied out of fear and her mom is making it sound like she did it for another reason.
"Just because you are in college does not mean you should stray from your faith."
Tobin had had it at this point and slammed her hands down, "I've already strayed from my faith, Mom. I'm gay and I've drank and partied and had premarital sex and so many other sins that I can't even count. So there. No more lies. How does it feel to know that your baby girl isn't perfect?"
Cindy took everything in, piece by piece, "Okay," she put down a $100 bill before standing, "I didn't care about you being gay, I really didn't but to know that college has turned you into something you're not upsets me like no other."
Tobin just scoffed, "No, I think this was exactly who I was meant to be. All I needed to do was get away from you and dad for me to realize it."
That shocked Cindy because she always believed that she had a good relationship with her daughter, "When I get home, I'm talking to Dad because I want to pull you out of college until you realize what you're doing."
