There came soft click and the door had unlocked. Bella turned to smile at me,
"Thomas, welcome to our humble abode."
...
So this was where they stayed.
I was so interested to see more but for some reason my body had decided to keep my feet glued to the ground. Peter helpfully ushered me inside.
The place was so...
Cosy?...I suppose...
It was what used to be a hall. Like that one I used to do ballet class in. Oh how I loved that class.
There were cracks in the cream walls and the floor was scratched up. All the furniture there looked ether second hand or hand made. I kinda liked it in a way. It has a sort of vintage appeal about it. I've always been a fan of vintage things.
"I like the furniture."
"Thank the courtesy of the street." Said Rose, slumping down on a lumpy mattress. I assumed it was her bed.
"Here you go Thomas, you can sleep here, by me." Peter pointed to the mattress next to his.
"It's nothing fancy but it's a decent thing to sleep on." Smiled Lauren, laying down blanket and a pillow on my new bed.
"Nah I love it. I love this place."
Bella put a hand to her heart, "Aww that's so sweet, thank you." Bella said, kindly.
"Aren't you just the cutest?" Peter cooed. I chuckled. I was starting to like these people a lot.
They directed me to the bathroom which was behind an old wooden door. It was very simple: A shower with a faded floral curtain, a toilet that looked like it was on it's last legs, a radiator that coughed and sputtered and a grimy sink with mirror that was cracked at the edges.
Nothing fancy but fairly decent: pretty much a blessing for me. Tonight I'd thought I'd be sleeping on the streets but now I've gotten more than I could've hoped for.
The beds were merely mattresses that looked like they were discarded by other people and left for the streets. They probably were. I didn't mind though. I was quite a sleeper so it wouldn't bother me.
I slept on a mattress next to Peter in the corner. Which was two blue mattresses ripped at the sides, they probably came together. Bella had her own bed. Which only consisted of a yoga mat and a sleeping bag. She slept on a long, wide, thick, low shelf. Lauren and Rose shared a double mattress in the other corner.
I watched them all now: Bella snuggling under her sleeping bag. Peter bellowing about how he needs a beauty sleep. Lauren giggling and jumping in under the tattered duet whilst Rose complains about her cold feet. Telling her to put on some bloody socks.
"So...is there anything you hope to be for the future?" I asked as I got into bed. This had been a question that lingered in my mind.
"Oh yeah. We all do." Lauren peeped.
"I've always wanted to be a lawyer." Said Bella.
"I wanna be an artist." Said Peter.
"I want to go into the mathematics field." Said Lauren.
"I want to go somewhere with my poetry." Said Rose, "What do you want to do, Thomas?"
I could stop a smile hiding in the corners of my mouth, "Well...ever since I was little, I've always had a passion for dance."
"Nice, a dancer." They all chimed.
"I'm sure you can get there Thomas. At least you're more ahead than the rest of us." Bella exclaimed.
"What'd you mean?" I asked.
"Well...you see...we all want to be something but we can't really get there. It'll be quite hard for me to become a lawyer because I never finished school."
"Yeah and, you know, who'd want to buy my paintings? I mean they're not gonna be hanging up in a gallery anytime soon. How the hell do I even sell them?" Peter laughed.
"And I want to go to college and uni but I just don't have enough money for everything." Lauren shrugged.
"Like a poet could ever get stable work. There's none around today." Rose criticised.
"But it's all ok, I suppose. We've all got each other, and the bar. There's plenty of time to do all this in our lives." Bella explained.Rose chuckled bitterly, "Time. Sooner or later it'll run out. Then where will we be?"
Peter scoffed, "Enough of your depressing talk. I'm sure things will all work out."
