Jane's father had brought her home an elastic band the next day, presenting it to her with a small yet sympathetic smile, as if he wished that she didn't need it to get by everyday. She plucked it from his hands happily, but as soon as she got to school, she found that it stayed in her pocket undisturbed. Over the next couple of days, the messages were exchanged between the two, both of them coming up with code names for each other, both glad that they had someone to help them feel less alone. Jane would write down something for them, and the next day she was in class, a reply would be scribbled down in messy handwriting. She giggled, instantly knowing that it must have been a boy from the messy handwriting, the person never dotting their i's or crossing their t's properly.
Why did you reply?
That's typically what I do when someone says HI
Oh
You're bored too?
I guess, I just like something to distract me
Well, I'm glad I'm being used as a distraction, I feel so loved
Don't be silly, I don't even know who you are
I go to your school, that's a clue
WOW? Really? I would have never guessed!
Call me Paladin, don't ask why
You can call me El
There is no El in this school
It isn't my name, mouthbreather
So, why do you need a distraction in class?
It stops me from thinking about something that I don't want to think about
I'm guessing you don't want to talk about it either?
No
Well, technically we aren't talking...we are writing
You could tell people
I don't even know who you are, and I would never do that even if I did
My Mom died last spring and I can't stop thinking about it
El, I'm so sorry
Don't say sorry...that's what everyone says
I'm still sorry. But what do you want me to say?
That it will be okay
It will be okay
Don't lie
Friends don't lie
You just did
Maybe it won't be okay now, but it will be someday

I am so in love with writing this. I hope you are as in love as I am with this story, it will be finished within the next few days anyway! It is so cute to write about our favorite writing on desks which is an idea I have had for ages!
Please leave some feedback, let me know what you think will happen next and what you like about this story so far! I hope it is clear enough who is talking without a key, but I will be back with another couple of chapters any day now<3
