I barely made. Or so I think. I was five minutes late. Great. Just great. Another thing to add to today. I slump down in my chair of the first period class as I'm yelled by the teacher who I don't even bother to remember the name of not to do that again. I don't listen. I never do. I hear other kids mocking me and making fun of me. It's not like I care. They can live their lives the way that they want to. The class passes extremely fast. That's when I overhear a conversation that actually caught my attention.
"What ever happened to that Toby girl?" One of the jocks asks another one.
"I thought she died. Isn't that what they told us anways?"
"Well yeah, but what actually happened to her. It's like she changed after running into those woods. She's not herself anymore."
"Do you actually care about that insane kid?"
"No. I just feel guilty for not knowing. Don't you"
"No. I don't care about her. Dead or not I don't care." I snap after hearing that.
"What if it was jocks like you that killed her?! Ever that of that Mike!" I turn towards them making the jump.
"What does it mean to you, goth?" Mike turns towards me.
"She's my nieghbor and childhood friend." I spat back at him.
"Oh! Why didn't you say so then!" He says obviously being sarcastic. "Why don't you crawl back into the hole that you came from homo." He shooed me away. I scoff and walk away from him. I keep my eyes down until I run into something. I look to find the tallest, strongest kid in school. His name is Matt Johnson, grandson of Ms. Johnson. He looks down at me.
"You okay Sarah?" Though he may be the toughest kid in school, he has a large heart.
"Yea. I'm fine." I shrug. I didn't think my lie was obvoius but apparently it was. Matt looks at the two jocks who are by this point frozen with fear.
"They bothering you again?"
"Was it that obvious?"
"Yep"
"Don't worry about them anymore then." He messes with my hair and smiles down at me. I notice a gem around his neck like his grandmother's, but his was orange.
The rest of the school day goes by. Same as yesterday for the most part at least. Once I get out of school, I'm presented by a very pleasant voice.
"Hey, Yo Sarah!" It was Toby. She smiled and waved towards me. I feel myself blush slightly at the sight of her. I feel something rub up against my leg. I look down to find Ike there. Toby's dog is named Eisenhower, but we call him Ike for short. Ike is always with Toby to make sure she is safe. She also NEVER says his real name when she is on her medication for schizophrenia.
"Hey, what's up?"
"Oh you know, just taking Jack for a walk." Good she's taking her medicine. "How was school?"
"Boring! How was your "mom's" home schooling working out you?" "
"I hate it! I liked it better here." She points at the school. She was bullied ten times worse than me now. I feel bad for her. Still to this day when ever she walks Ike near the school when the bullies are out, she gets yelled at by them.
"Wow, really?"
"Yeah, you know how much I hate Lily." Lily is her adoptive mother. Toby's parents, as far as I know, were killed or went missing. Her past is very foggy, and thanks to her schizophrenia we might never know what really happened.
