I awoke with a start the next morning with a start. I had absolutely no dreams, which was REALLY strange. I stretched and saw a piece of paper taped to a bear statue. I walked over to it and it said "Friday schedule Cabin: Artemis". I looked down at the first activity and it said "Greek Mythology Role: teacher."
I was teaching Greek Mythology??? Why hadn't Chiron told me? I suppose it wasn't that bad; after all, I do know A LOT about Greek mythology.
I walked over to the closet and open it to find a camp t-shirt and a fresh pair of running shorts and underwear. There were also toiletries so I could get ready before today's activities. I took the stuff and headed out the door to the showers. I decided to leave my necklace on because it was the only piece of my dad I had with me. Just as I was leaving, I noticed a group of Ares boys crowded around a scrawny boy, ranting something about in the name of Ares.
"Ares is SO much cooler than Athena. We know how to fight!" said the tallest of the group. He had ratty brown hair and eyes the color of rust. "At least we can hold a weapon."
"Hey, leave him alone." I say without really thinking. Everybody turns to face me, including the Athena boy. I froze. It was the same boy I had seen at the claiming.
"What did you say girlie?" said the large boy.
"I said leave him alone."
He chuckled. "Hey, I remember you. Your Artemis' kid right? What are you gonna do, shoot me?"
I frowned and saw a squirrel. I thought now would probably be a good time to try out my powers.
Hey mister squirrel, I thought. Could you do me a favor?
To my greatest surprise it nodded.
Alright, could you go and attack that big Ares boy for me?
It again nodded and scampered to the Ares boy and crawled up the leg of his jeans. He began to twitch like he had something in his pants, which of course he did.
He started to walk away and he said "May Ares curse you forever child of Artemis!" I just rolled my eyes when the Athena child spoke.
"That was probably not the best idea. Trust me, you do NOT want Kyle LeFleur as an enemy." His voice came out a bit higher in octave than I expected.
"Well sorry for saving you from getting pummeled."
"I wasn't going to get pummeled, I had everything under control." I just rolled my eyes again.
"Can you at least tell me your name?"
He hesitated and then said "James McBrian." Then he walked back to his cabin.
I turned back toward my cabin to drop off my old clothes and grab my activities schedule.
I stalked toward the Big House and bumped into Melissa. "Hey." she says.
" 'Sup?" I replied.
"So, daughter of Artemis huh? I bet you didn't expect that."
"No, obviously. I mean, she's supposed to be a maiden goddess right? Nobody would have expected it."
"I suppose not. So, how's life?" she asks me.
I smiled. It's a joke we shared with each other many times before. "Terrible."
"Well, I should probably head off to sword fighting now. Hopefully Michael won't whip my butt this time..."
"You'll be fine," I say reassuringly. "Good luck."
