In no time, James had a roaring fire going. We sat, just staring at the fire for a few minutes until James said "Melissa and I broke up." I personally think that was very random but all I could manage to saw as "Oh."
He nodded. "We both agree it wasn't going to work out. I guess I was just desperate, you know? Almost everyone else had one and Melissa was my oldest friend and I naturally known she wasn't interested in love." He was basically telling me stuff I had already known but I looked at him and listened to every word. "I don't know what I was thinking. I had seen from the canoe ride that she really only thought of me as a friend. People do desperate things for love." He looked at me "Was I really that desperate?"
I didn't have an answer. I was never really a love expert, but James was my friend so I tried to give the best advice I could. "You wanted to fit in. And that's understandable. But you were to hasty. You thought you found "the" one but you only found a friend who was willing to act in love with you for your happiness. That's a quality of a friend, not a girlfriend. Besides, Melissa is 2 years younger than you."
"What does that mean?" James asked. He was still staring me with his watery blue-gray eyes and I found a hard time meeting them. "It means we are still to young to be in love and sometimes have to wait forever to find the one we are meant to be with. It might not be now, but you will find that person one day. Okay?"
"Okay." he replied. "You really should rest now."
"I know. I am beginning to feel tired." I confessed.
I leaned down and put my head on his legs, using them as a pillow, then almost immediately sat up. "Sorry! I wasn't- I mean-"
He laughed. "It's ok. I understand. You're tired. As long as you're not flirting, I'm ok with it."
I smiled then put my head back down. He smelled vaguely of cologne but some how, I didn't mind. I felt the warmth of the fire on my face and dozed off to sleep.
