"Elijah? What are you doing here?" My eyebrows raised in surprise as I moved towards him. "Is everything okay?"

He nodded, his face devoid of all emotion. Gone was the lust that had darkened his eyes the night before, as well as the gentle smile that had curved his lips during our date.

"Do you have a moment, Serena?" He shoved his hands into the pockets of his perfectly pressed navy slacks.

"Of course. Let's have a seat," I gestured towards a booth at the back of the bar, before crossing the room together.

My eyes landed on the empty space where the jukebox used to sit. Visions of Kol and his wrench flashed through my mind, and I had to bite back the smile that wanted to spread across my face.

But Elijah's stoic expression as I sat down across from him brought me back to the present. My heart began to hammer in alarm as I imagined the possible reasons for his visit.

"What's going on?"

"I wanted to be the one to tell you that I will be leaving town earlier than I had previously anticipated," he said, his gaze fixed on a spot above my head.

"I see," I said softly, dropping my eyes to my hands resting at my lap. I frowned, wondering if there was something I had done to cause him to become so cold and distant.

"Despite her transgressions, I have decided to try to make amends with my girlfriend, Katerina. I owe it to my family and our business to try to work on my relationship." He swallowed, his eyes now roaming the bar disinterestedly.

"Oh." To say that I wasn't upset by the news would have been a lie. My gaze fell to his lips, the memory of his kisses making me feel dizzy. He had sent those beautiful flowers only hours earlier...

When did he decide he no longer wanted me?

The unexpected pain in my chest was precisely why I never let people inside.

"Well, I wish you both luck," I lied, straightening in my chair.

"Thank you," he said softly.

I allowed myself exactly one half second to wallow, before I secured myself back into my trusty ice castle. My lips pressed into a tight line and my gaze hardened.

"I'd better go help Caroline. Kol's out with the flu, so we're shorthanded."

He flinched. My dismissal obviously stung, but I couldn't bring myself to care anymore.

"Of course." He rose from his chair at the same time I did, a frown tugging at his lips as he watched me walk away from him and the life we could have had together.

With one last glimpse of me, he strode out of the door. He rolled his eyes as he pulled out the phone that had been ringing incessantly all morning.

"Yes, Katerina," he answered, his voice laced with annoyance.

"You're dissolving our partnership, Elijah? Are you fucking kidding me?"

He sighed as he crossed the street, putting the inevitable distance between him and me, the woman who helped him believe in love again.

My feet were aching and my back sore as I stepped onto the sidewalk outside of my apartment building. Slipping off my heels, I walked barefoot down the corridor towards the stairwell. I let my gaze linger on Kol's door only a moment before forcing myself upstairs for some much-needed time alone to process my thoughts.
